i got the plat trophy for it because it takes 20 hours and it was a fantastically hollow experience. so much game design of survivors you never think twice about gets hollowed out in crawlers and it turns out that's all the stuff holding it together.

yeah that's almost exactly where i'm at. it's neat that there's an outlet for fans to engage in theorycrafting [within reason] but if nothing ever comes of gaster i will sleep peacefully. he was a fun little secret in undertale and i'd only really care about seeing him if there's Good Reason

even some casuals like me use standalone just because that's what i was recommended when i joined, there's no advantage to using steam for FF14 besides it being the platform all the other games are on. hell i use steam as a controller layer for standalone which would otherwise be the sole benefit.

it's especially frustrating because like. old games are awesome. but a lot of the time people will either knowingly or not omit a lot of the issues those games had that devs moved away from. balance nowadays has issues but at least modern games don't have a pick so bad you might as well be throwing

while i don't *regret* my time with FF14 by any means, so much of the MSQ experience is sawdust that it feels uniquely bad to put time into because 2-3 hours in FF14 is like putting 1 hour into a normal JRPG.

one of the fun things about keeping logs of games finished is that i can see that the year i played through HW/STB/SHB, 2022, was also the year i played the least games since i started logging. 25 games that year and 2023 was 39, and that was also the year i played FF1-10 [except 9].

jeff kaplan was maybe the best i've seen a front facing dev go because most of the community made loving memes of him in spite of the fact that the overwatch balancing team routinely dropped some of the worst patches known to man. the number of patches that improved the game are single digits.

having a front facing dev as the herald for a game's balancing decisions is very often fraught, and similarly patches coming from the team with minimal communication causes problems in the exact opposite direction, so having a pseudonymous guy people can't try to dox is a perfect middle ground
