The Space in Which We Travel Calida Rawles 2019 Acrylic on canvas 7 x 12 feet (218.6 × 366.08 × 5.08 cm) LACMA Los Angeles, California Photo: April 5, 2021
Color photo of hyper-realistic depiction of figures submerged in luminous, rippling water. Two young girls submerged are making a figure eight, infinity symbol, with their arms. They’re wearing white dresses.

For years, Rawles put her personal painting aspirations on the backburner, working as a graphic designer. In 2004, after moving to Los Angeles, finally took a risk on her dream. She made a formal pact with her husband: she would rent a studio space and spend one full year painting without any expectations of financial return or pressure to sell her work, simply to find her visual voice.

During this journey, she began using swimming pools to photograph Black subjects underwater, translating the distorted light, ripples, and bubbles into massive, hyper-realistic portraits.

Years later, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates was about to publish his debut novel, The Water Dancer. The book tells the story of an enslaved man who possesses a magical, water-based power of teleportation rooted in ancestral memory. When Coates happened upon Rawles' submarine portraits, he recognized a mirror of his literary vision. The two bonded, and Coates chose one of Rawles' underwater paintings for the cover art for his novel.

Rawles begins every painting by a series of underwater photographs. She hires models, rents a swimming pool, and uses underwater housing for her cameras. For many of her works, she worked closely with her daughters—her eldest daughter helped shoot the reference photographs of her younger daughters submerged in the water.

Because a single photo rarely captures the perfect emotional expression alongside the ideal water ripple, she takes hundreds of photos. She then digitally merges elements from various frames to construct a single, composite reference image.

After mapping out the composition on canvas, she uses tiny brushes (even for massive 12-foot paintings) to capture every complex pocket of air, bubble, and distorted ripple with agonizingly precise acrylic layers.

Ernie Barnes "The Sugar Shack" (1976) Acrylic on canvas | 36 x 48 in. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) #ArtSky #Barnes #AfricanAmericanArt
"The Sugar Shack" (1976) by the renowned African-American artist Ernie Barnes. It is a celebrated 36 x 48 inch acrylic on canvas painting that capturing the essence of Black life, dance, and rhythm.
Painting Details
Artist: Ernie Barnes (1938–2009)
Title: "The Sugar Shack"
Year: 1976
Medium: Acrylic on canvas

Cultural Impact: Famously featured in the closing credits of the 1970s sitcom Good Times and used as the cover art for Marvin Gaye's 1976 album, "I Want You"
__________

The Scene
The painting depicts a crowded, high-energy dance hall filled with Black men and women moving intensely to music. The room has a rustic, wooden structure with exposed beams. Hanging from the ceiling are large banners reading "The Sugar Shack," "Welcome to the Sugar Shack featuring Big Daddy Rucker," and a sign for the radio station "WMPG."
The Figures and MovementThe hallmark of Ernie Barnes' style is elongated, fluid anatomy. The dancers possess stretched limbs, exaggerated muscles, and highly expressive poses.
The central focus features a man and woman locked in a passionate, rhythmic dance. The woman wears a form-fitting blue dress that accentuates her movement, while the man matches her energy, bending his body fluidly.
To the right, a man in a light blue suit and hat leans deeply backward, completely swept up in the rhythm.
Almost every figure in the room has their eyes closed. Barnes deliberately painted his figures with closed eyes to signify that they are not just looking at their surroundings, but deeply feeling the music and the spirit of the space.
Lighting, Color, and Atmosphere
The color palette is warm and vibrant, dominated by rich earth tones like deep browns and yellows, juxtaposed against the bright blues, oranges, and whites of the dancers' clothing. The lighting feels atmospheric and dramatic, cutting through the crowded hall to cast sharp highlights on the moving muscles, sweat, and fabric, emphasizing a collective, uninhibited joy.

🖼️ ¿Interior o exterior?
