Sat in the hotel bar listening to a few random tracks that Genesis in their infinite wisdom decided to throw away. Steve’s Inside and Out has got to be the best track that never appeared on a Genesis album. In fact, I love the entire EP. It may be dated, but then again so am I.

I often wonder how their earlier albums would sound if they re-recorded and re-mixed with clean vocals.

Now playing… Syzygy ~ Realms Of Eternity The most hidden prog gem I’ve heard. Instrumental up to that point, the band brought in renowned vocalist Marc Boals for this album. Epic track: Dialectic Album not on streaming platforms, but is on YouTube … youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Now playing … I know I’m going to get roasted by die-hard Opeth fans, but for me the best decision the band made was to drop the bloody awful death growls. This, and the three or four other clean vocal albums starting with 2003’s Damnation are superb and well worth a listen.

Now playing … ELO - Face The Music A tremendous album, coming bang slap in the middle of what I regard as their most innovative period (ie. Eldorado, Face The Music, A New World Record).

Kos day 5 … Genesis worst to best (IMHO) … No 11: Genesis (self-titled) Another late career, low ranking recording which would have been placed much lower if not for the Home By The Sea brace and (to a much lesser extent) Mama. Illegal Alien amongst their worst. #Genesis15

Kos day 5 … Pink Floyd worst to best (IMHO) … No 11: More Floyd’s first album without Syd and the soundtrack for the Barbet Schroeder film depicting the effects of drug addiction. Eclectic and experimental with some decent tracks (Cirrus, Nile, Cymbeline, Green). #Floyd15

A Yes album in all but name. Awful album cover. Re-issue wasn’t much better TBH. AI has a lot to answer for.

My favourite time of day … sitting in the hotel bar waiting for my wife to get ready whilst having a drink and listening to a top album. For me, a vital ingredient of a 5 ⭐️ album is its consistency. End to end brilliance. No skipping tracks. This one certainly qualifies.

Today I’ve been accused by one Genesis fan of being ‘insulting’, called a ‘smart-arse’ by another and been told this whole thread is completely unnecessary by a third. And I’m only four days in! Prog rock fans, eh!? 😄

Now playing … Excellent mid ‘70s albums by Sebastian Hardie, one of Australia’s first prog rock bands. Sadly, the band split in two following musical differences shortly after, with little creative output from either until they reunited in 2011 for a fairly decent third album.

Now playing … Hats Off Gentlemen It's Adequate ~ Parallel Lives The latest from the London based duo who bring a modern approach to prog rock. Worth a listen if you like fairly raw vocals and unconventional, frequently changing time signatures with classical instrumentation.

Kos day 4 … Pink Floyd worst to best (IMHO) … No 12: The Endless River Floyd’s final album, dedicated to Rick. Sadly, little to get excited about although the final track, Louder Than Words allways brings a lump to my throat thinking about what could have been. #Floyd15

Now playing… What makes this album so special is the huge diversity of the music, seamlessly crossing between vastly different styles throughout. Bernie Taupin supposedly wrote all of the lyrics within two & a half weeks, with Elton taking just three days to compose the music.

Kos day 4 … Genesis worst to best (IMHO) … No 12: We Can’t Dance Phil’s last hoorah with the band before departing. More tripe than a butcher’s shop on here but a couple of decent tracks nevertheless in Driving The Last Spike & Fading Lights. Mediocre at best. #Genesis15

Jon Anderson … For me, the most endearing and enduring singer of progressive rock ever. His voice live at nearing 82 is remarkable, bordering on unbelievable. Like many, his music has meant an enormous amount to me over the past five or six decades.

Well, the 3 posted so far have caused more outrage than expected 😄 So far I’ve been called a ‘dummy’ by a Genesis fan and been accused of not being a Pink Floyd fan because I can’t claim to worship every one of the 222 tracks they’ve recorded. Oh well - only another 12 to go😄

Now playing … Superb album by Ray with a serious and very sad storyline behind it. The album is dedicated to a good friend of his, who was first paralysed in an accident and eventually took his own life. Concludes with an excellent cover of Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell.

Kos day 3 … Pink Floyd worst to best (IMHO) … No 13: A Saucerful Of Secrets Floyd’s only album as a 5-piece owing to Syd’s deteriorating mental health. Transitional and it shows. A couple of enduring tracks (Remember A Day, Set The Controls) but otherwise dated. #Floyd15

Now playing … Some great tracks on what was, for me, the album where Yes got their mojo back. A couple of fine albums followed, after which they departed company with vocalists Jon Anderson and (later) Benoît David and IMHO it all went downhill.

Now playing… The recently released album from Brazilian band Tireless Mind, their third overall and the second in the trilogy that started with 2017’s The Comfort Of An Endless Pain. Melancholic acoustic 70’s style symphonic prog interspersed with more modern heavier sections.

Kos day 3 … Genesis worst to best (IMHO) … No 13: Calling All Stations Tony and Mike should have quit following Phil’s departure but insisted on recruiting Ray Wilson to sing on tracks they’d already written. A huge mistake and a sad end for a once great band. #Genesis15

Surely the greatest attribute of music, and art in general is its subjectivity. What I hear and perceive as simply wonderful, others hearing exactly the same thing interpret as absolute tosh. And vice versa. But even wonderful is there’s no right or wrong. So, don’t be afraid to disagree Hector 👍
