Work Text:
The knock came soft. Too soft for who Price knew waited on the other side of the door. He barely looked up from his desk—pen still perched between his fingers and a stack of after-action reports open beneath him. The digital clock on the far wall read 17:42, just about the right time for the lad to come sulking in if he was attempting to avoid people.

Though… if he was… it wasn't a good sign.

"Come in," Price called gently, setting the pen aside.

The door creaked open. Hesitant. Slow, like it wanted to shield whoever was on the other side. And for good reason, too—Johnny stepped inside like a man walking to his execution. Boots scuffing against the floor, fatigues stained dark with sweat and grime and what Price desperately hoped wasn't the lad's own blood. Dust clung to his trousers, and a smear of something—ash?—cut across the curve of his jaw.
