Yup. And FWIW, I liked Ncuti in the role. Not my fave, but he was good & Doctory. That's another mess: Ncuti was clearly a rising star when he was cast. How did RTD think he would keep Ncuti when there was no guarantee of anything beyond 2 years? Better to have cast an unknown, like Matt was.

We survived on Virgin novels, VHS oddities (the Stranger videos!), & the brief rush of the McGann movie. But we never expected to see Who again. For newer fans, yeah, it’ll be rough. You’ve had a mostly steady diet of Who for 20 yrs. (And can we all agree that 8 eps + an Xmas special is a joke?)

4) What now? Well, right now, no new episodes are in the works. It’ll likely be that way for a while. Even if negotiations with a new host started tomorrow & went well, we wouldn’t see new Who for another 2 or 3 years. For us older Whovians, it’s a return to the Wilderness Years.

Result: Series 14 & 15 were filled w/ glossy, gorgeous messes. Conversely, most of the best stories were character driven (eg, BOOM, Rogue) & were not written by RTD. This is not a coincidence. (Yes, he wrote the amazing "73 Yards," but he also gave us that damn musical number, so it’s a wash.)

IMPORTANT: This doesn’t take away from RTD’s importance. He resurrected the series in 2005. It was a hit! He’ll be on Who’s Mt Rushmore, along with Verity, Whitaker, & Hartnell. But today's RTD apparently got swept up in Disney fever, aka “Because we HAVE a big budget, we should USE the big budget."

The seeds of the next 2 years were planted: bigger focus on “magic” (RTD-speak for “I can do anything and not explain it. Look, Wish Baby!”), an embrace of niche nostalgia that alienated new Disney viewers, & stories that prioritized SFX over good storytelling – the opposite of what Who had been.

The problem: There was no buzz to maintain. The audience had slipped away. The finale was awful. The 2-year deal was done. Disney was done. Did I mention that RTD lied? 2) With that being the case, then why do the Billie Piper thing? Why not just leave it as an open-ended regeneration…

Niblings stayed overnight and entirely unprompted by me, there was a point where the 10 year old was watching Dragonfire and the 14 year old Power of the Daleks. I wandered in to iPads of classic Who! What kind of a teenager starts watching Troughton from the actual start? Honestly. Kids these days.
