I don't think it accurately describes the broader experience of trans women in China, although many of the individual problems it mentions are very real and can be severe.

I should disclose that I actually know Amber, the author of those slides. She is a very polarizing and charismatic figure in Chinese transfem circles, with both strong supporters and strong critics. I am personally critical of her, but that isn't why I disagree with this post. She has also spent relatively little time in China in recent years and has mostly lived in Canada, which I think matters when presenting something as a general description of life for trans women in China.

My main problem is the almost teleological structure of her argument. She takes a number of real but quite different problems and arranges them into a single chain, as if Chinese society and institutions were all moving coherently toward the same anti-trans objective. That just isn't how I experience or understand China. Most people don't even know much about trans people, and a lot of what harms us comes from institutions with much broader purposes or dysfunctions rather than some coherent project against trans people.

For example, parental control is a huge problem, including parents sending trans children to conversion institutions. But excessive parental power in China extends far beyond trans people: cishet young people considered rebellious, mentally ill, "internet addicted," or simply unwilling to follow the expected life path have also been forcibly institutionalized. Trans people are particularly vulnerable to this system, but the system wasn't constructed specifically for us.

Some of the most serious specifically trans problems are actually much more mundane. Changing your legal sex can change your ID number, while universities may refuse or be unable to update old academic records accordingly. Employers verify education against your ID, so someone can effectively end up with an unusable degree after transitioning. This absurd situation is one reason some Chinese trans women choose to study abroad. SRS is also simply very expensive, while many young trans women have little independent income and may have lost family support.

So yes, I would describe the situation of many trans women in China as genuinely bad, sometimes disastrously so. But I don't recognize Amber's picture of a society in which every institution, prejudice and administrative problem forms one coherent machine designed to produce trans suffering. It turns a messy combination of family power, bureaucratic rigidity, economic inequality, ignorance and gender conservatism into a single intentional historical process. Ironically, I think that makes it harder rather than easier to understand what Chinese trans people are actually dealing with.

crazy indeed
Caitlin Johnstone: It’s crazy this even needs to be said, but if you are a westerner your ONLY job is to oppose the abuses of the western empire. Not Iran. Not China. Not Russia, Cuba or North Korea.

If you live in the US or one of its allied nations, then you live under the single most tyrannical and murderous power structure on earth, and that’s where your focus belongs. You do not have any legitimacy in squandering any of your energy and attention criticizing human rights abuses in empire-targeted nations while living under a globe-spanning empire that is fueled by a nonstop river of human blood. It is not okay for you to use your western privilege to attack the nations your own government is working to help absorb into the power structure you live under.
