Building bridges between open-source projects is a big part of why I joined @marimo.io. I got to know the @prefix.dev folks through @scipyconf.bsky.social, and worked together to make computational research easier to reproduce and share. Special thanks to @julianhofer.eu and Ruben Arts!

Congratulations to the Mojo 1.0 release @Modular! So glad to have you in our community, and seeing @clattner_llvm on stage with `pixi` in the background was definitely a highlight for us.

Any Rust, C++ or Python project on GitHub can become a global tool on your machine. No recipe, no manifest in the repo. Just name the backend.

Building a git repo that never heard of Pixi used to mean forking it. Now you declare the build backend inline and Pixi builds it from source.

Conda packages have extras now. Optional dependency groups you declare and then consume, via v3 repodata. Plus when conditions and variant flags.

Lastly, I'm a contributor to the `pixi-build-mojo` backend, which is what @prefix.dev can use to build Mojo projects: pixi.prefix.dev/latest/build... And allows you to install dependencies directly from GitHub, which is really cool!

PEP 723 only covers Python and PyPI, so Pixi reads tool.pixi for the rest. Which means conda dependencies in a standalone script. gdal from a single file, no build step.

Prefix.dev - the Pixi company @prefix.dev · 12/08/2026
A single Python file can now carry its own environment. pixi run --script hello.py Pixi reads PEP 723 inline metadata. No pixi.toml, no .pixi folder, no lock file unless you ask for one.

pixi 0.76 can now run standalone python scripts in isolated, on-demand environments. dependencies live inline via PEP 723, like uv supports, but pixi can layer on conda and system dependencies too. fun to build this with @prefix.dev folks. coming to a @marimo.io notebook near you SOON.
Screenshot of a standalone Python script declaring Rich and the system package FFmpeg as inline dependencies, then running in an isolated environment with pixi run --script.

Security tip for conda package authors: prefer environment-variable JSON files over activation scripts. Activation scripts run arbitrary shell code on every activation. Plain env-var JSON does the same job in most cases, with none of the code-execution risk.

Using bioconda usually means also configuring conda-forge and a few other channels by hand. Cumbersome, and easy to get wrong. Our new channel-relations CEP moves that info into repodata, so the solver just knows which channels belong together.

Flags (CEP 45) Select build variants by named tag instead of glob-matching the build string: pytorch[flags=[gpu, blas:*]] Build with rattler-build --v3; Pixi turns v3 on automatically when it sees the new fields. Feedback welcome while it's in beta 🙏

Conditional dependencies (CEP 43) Deps that only apply when a condition holds. Ship one noarch package and add e.g.: pywin32[when="__win"] Conditions combine virtual packages, versions and packages with and / or / not.
