After many months of work, it is done. The complete Kiselev series is in English. For over 70 years these were the mathematics textbooks of Russian and Soviet schools. More than 80 million students learned from them.

Four divisions, 59 chapters, 570 sections. From what it means for a letter to stand for a quantity, all the way to the irreducible case of the cubic. Two hundred years. No English edition. Not once. Until today.

Then the application of algebra to geometry — trigonometry, conic sections, and the foundations of the calculus. That trilogy is where Russian school mathematics begins. Kiselev comes after it. The Soviet school comes after Kiselev. Part I — Algebra, 1820.

And late in life he did one more thing. He took the algebra he had learned at Euler’s elbow and built it into a course for the schools of the Russian Empire. Three volumes. Algebra. Then geometry.

Then Euler died in 1783, and the assistant became the scientist. Academician that same year. Professor of mathematics. And from 1800 until his own death in 1826, permanent secretary of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. There is a theorem named after him. A sequence of numbers too.

Bernoulli knew exactly who to send. Nicolas Fuss arrived in St Petersburg in May 1773. He was eighteen. He stayed for the rest of his life. At Euler’s side he helped push more than 250 papers into print. Not transcription — he developed the ideas, built the tables, worked the examples.

In 1772 an eye operation left Leonhard Euler almost completely blind. He could still do the mathematics. He could not read it or write it. So he needed someone. Not a copyist — someone who could follow him. Euler turned to his old friend Daniel Bernoulli in Basel.

The first edition sold out at once. The second followed within a year. Many mathematicians call it Kiselev’s best book. It ran to 26 editions before the Revolution and 16 after. The method is demanding. Definitions are precise. Theorems are proved. Constructions are justified.

“A sense of measure.” That was the verdict of the Ministry of Education’s reviewer on Kiselev’s Elementary Geometry in 1893. The author, he wrote, nowhere goes to excess — neither in detail nor in abridgement — but strives only to make the textbook accessible and useful.

Counting what comes next, given what came before, is the core idea behind n-gram models — and, many steps later, the language models we use today. The full story of how Chebyshev, Markov and Lyapunov built modern probability in St Petersburg is one of the strongest chapters in A. P.

To show the idea in action, he counted how 20,000 vowels and consonants alternate in Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin. Published in 1913. Yushkevich notes that at the time the example could look minor, even artificial. It wasn’t.

Markov chains began with a poem. From 1906, A. A. Markov built a theory of “trials connected in a chain” — random events that depend on the one before. His key result: the law of large numbers still holds without independence. Probability theory had assumed independence for two centuries.

Every gradient in deep learning is matrix calculus. Almost nobody who ships models can do it by hand. Autodiff made that survivable, not unnecessary. The moment a loss surface misbehaves, or a Jacobian needs interpreting, you are back to the mathematics.

Seven million copies in all. Part II is where that care shows most. It is the second half of the course — grades 8 to 10, 12 chapters, sections 127 to 313 — the material that carries a student from school algebra to university readiness. Nothing is skipped. Nothing is asserted without proof.

Kiselev had a rule for critics. Don’t argue. Rewrite. When a respected professor found weaknesses in his algebra, Kiselev revised the book instead of defending it. He did this for decades, edition after edition. The course passed 30 editions before 1917 and more than 10 after.

The name that stuck in most textbooks was Schwarz’s. It is one of the most-used inequalities in all of analysis. Every correlation coefficient bounded by 1, every cosine similarity, every projection argument in linear algebra rests on it. Bunyakovsky was no obscure figure.

The Cauchy–Schwarz inequality has a third name most people never hear. In 1859, Viktor Bunyakovsky published the integral form of the inequality in the Bulletin of the St Petersburg Academy. Hermann Schwarz rediscovered it in 1884 — 25 years later.

Then, in 1933, a decree ordered schools back to stable textbooks. The state chose Kiselev’s. The first book to return was Algebra, Part I — 225,000 copies printed that year. Kiselev was 80 years old. He lived to see his algebra back in every Soviet classroom.

A revolution tried to replace Kiselev’s algebra. It failed. After 1917 the new Soviet schools dropped set lessons and set textbooks. Kiselev’s books stopped being printed. Pupils worked from workbooks and experimental “laboratory-brigade” methods. For more than a decade, the experiment ran.

Old Russian had its own words for enormous numbers. In the “great count”: t’ma = 106, legion = 1012, leodr = 1024, vran — literally “raven” — = 1048, koloda = 1049. Beyond that, the manuscripts say, no number exists in the Slavonic tongue — only God knows.

The Goldbach conjecture was written in Russia. Christian Goldbach — a lawyer by training and, Yushkevich says, always an amateur in mathematics — had moved to Russia, where he tutored the future Peter II. On 7 June 1742 he wrote to Euler with the guess that bears his name.

How Muscovite arithmeticians found “the money in a heap”: Count in 3s — for each coin left over, write 70. Count in 5s — write 21 per coin. Count in 7s — write 15 per coin. Add up. Subtract 105 until you can’t. Remainders 2, 3, 2 → 233 → 23 coins.
