So many MAGA arguments seem to boil down to, “If you strip it of all context, then tilt your head and squint, you’ll see it’s all on the up-and-up.”

And the fact that some of these ads originally ran AS CAMPAIGN ADS in 2024 kinds of seals the deal.

If Trump keeps using public money to fund campaign ads, I might be able to persuade my Democratic friends that taxation really is, under some circumstances, theft.

Patrick Chovanec @prchovanec.bsky.social · 4h
“Public service” advertisements are about flossing your teeth or looking both ways before crossing the street, not “communism is evil and by the way my opponents are all evil communists”.

Patrick Chovanec @prchovanec.bsky.social · 4h
If you take his existing comments - that electing Democrats means communism - and combine them with the ads - which warn of the dangers of communism and the benefits of his own agenda - then it is clearly a partisan message.

sadly the huge leaps forward in machine translation are likely to deprive us of such reliable gems as "dry" and "fuck" in Chinese using the same simplified character or my all-time favorite "Racist Park" (which was also an accurate description of the park, as it happened)

The main concern over an Iranian nuclear weapon wasn't that they would immediately use it, but its existence would destabilize the region. So we went and did that ourselves. 🤔

One issue is that the F4F's gear had to be hand-cranked, both raising and lowering - a major distraction on takeoff and landing!

Patrick Chovanec @prchovanec.bsky.social · 7h
When Trump bombed Iran's nuclear sites last year, there was skepticism about its effects, but not much criticism over the intent. His much broader war aimed at overthrowing the regime, which started this spring, and which prompted the closing of the Strait, is a very different matter.

Patrick Chovanec @prchovanec.bsky.social · 7h
I don't want to minimize concern about Iran's nuclear bomb-building program, but Iran does not currently possess an ICBM capable of delivering one to the United States. The immediate concern would be Israel or Saudi Arabia, not the US, which he implies.
