In the late Soviet Union, the nomenklatura monopolized privileges and, after the state collapsed, used inside connections to seize industries, becoming oligarchs. Ordinary citizens bore the brunt of stagnation, shortages, and eventual hyperinflation. Similarly, the Trump administration’s economic policies — from tax cuts and deregulation to tariffs that fragment global supply chains — overwhelmingly favor wealthy elites and corporations while shifting costs to consumers and workers. This resembles how Nazi Germany rewarded industrial backers such as Krupp and IG Farben, granting them monopolies, cheap labor, and eventually slave labor, while ordinary Germans endured repression and war mobilization. In all three systems, state power was channeled into protecting elites while transferring burdens onto the general population.
