Because just showing the video tells you nothing about offside calls as camera angles are deceiving when it comes to drawing a line in parallel with the last defender. The "CGI" isn't for show; it's a separate technology used for offside calls.

🚨🚨I have a new open-access article out in New Media and Society! Through in-depth interviews, I explore urban Indians’ beliefs about social media algorithms, demonstrating how social status and cultural narratives surrounding technology shape these beliefs. doi.org/10.1177/1461...

I'll be presenting my work on beliefs about social media algorithms in India virtually at #ICA26 on Friday. Sad not to be there in-person but if you are in Cape Town or attending online, please attend the session!

Yes! I have been noodling on writing something about this. My own work has focused on the use of more private spaces. I think not viewing these spaces as part of social media (as some do) is not productive, since they are often on the same platforms and are used to keep users on these platforms.

I’ve done some work on this specific question. I conceptualize channels like invite-only Discord servers as bounded social media places: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

I would argue that all of this applies to what we think of as "public" social media. Social interactions are still happening, but they happen in DM group chats, private FB groups, Discord servers, etc. I have some work on this: doi.org/10.1080/1058...

Pranav Malhotra's theoretical concept of bounded social media places provides a framework for studying platforms accounting for visibility, control, privacy & algorithmically-curated content presentation. This work can help facilitate more nuanced political theorizing for media ecologies.

Thank you for recognizing the role of bounded places, something that often gets lost when bold claims are made about the end of social media. And thanks for engaging with my work!

I somehow missed this article when it came out. Really good take on relational communication on social media in its current form, including quotes from communication researchers. Also doesn't hurt that it cites my work on bounded social media places :) www.theatlantic.com/family/2025/...
