Those students in France and Belgium are warming my heart. They are fighting for the quality education they were promised. They are active foils against the anti-intellectualism, declining literacy rates and the demonization of humanities.

The book celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore, bringing together insights from ISAS research fellows and researchers. I was an ISAS fellow in 2014 and again visited in 2017. I still think of those days fondly.

I conclude: without renewed global societal commitment for financing and changed approach to education as a collective endeavour, South Asia faces amongst most severe challenges for education recovery.

At the same time, South Asia has the sharpest growth in private provision of any region since 2000. I consider institutional-level effects with widening financing gaps, declining aid, and USAID withdrawal.

COVID-19 disruption is not a temporary break or technical hurdle but a threat to collective futures. Drawing from our analysis for the G20 (2020-22) using UNESCO data, Central and Southern Asia lost an average of 53 weeks, above the global average, India with the longest at 93 weeks.

The philosophical imperative moves beyond narrow utilitarian functions of education for labour market needs towards a social endeavour for human wellbeing. The governance concern recenters state responsibility to guarantee education and strengthen accountability for public and private actors.

Just received my copy of 'South Asia: Retrospect and Prospects', with my chapter, 'Education Disruption as a Threat to the Common Good: implications for South Asia. I argue that considering education as a common good has two imperatives: philosophical and governance.
