POWER UPDATE | Rich countries say they met their climate finance goal again in 2024. But there’s a catch. According to the OECD report, 67% of the $136.7 billion mobilised in climate finance in 2024 took the form of loans. Real climate finance should come in the form of grants.

Kenya leads East Africa in electricity access at 75% — yet 12 million Kenyans, still live without power. Across Africa, 600 million people or almost 50% of the population, are without electricity access. Energy access is possible with renewable solutions such as wind and solar mini-grids.

Elections are supposed to be decided by people, but increasingly, they are being shaped by the climate. Since 2006, over 90 elections across more than 50 countries have been affected by climate-related disasters, with dozens disrupted in 2024 alone. The impact can even influence election outcomes.

Elections are no longer purely political events, they are environmental ones. For decades, we compartmentalised. Politics stayed in the political arena. Business stayed in the boardroom. Climate was the problem of the affected — and only the affected.
