all hitherto existing discourse is just people in media grinding interpersonal axes
cnn: Similarly, New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie told Christie in his “Museum of Twitter” series that Farrar’s tweet was “defeatist” because it played into the idea of Trump being the only person with any agency — the “main character of the world” — that everyone else is stuck reacting to.

Instead, Bouie believes it’s the people and institutions around Trump — from Republicans to Democrats, Congress to the courts — that have made the last decade possible.

“Other people don’t bother to deal with the fact that you could probably get him to go away for good. They kind of allow him to wriggle his way back in,” Bouie said. “He’s really figured out that persistence is 99% of success. All you have to do is show up and not go away, and people will be like, ‘I guess this guy is supposed to be here.’” (White House staff did not respond to a request for comment for this story.)

diesel is about to go vertical and disappear. every geriatic in europe will freeze to death this winter. the EU must take strong, decisive action and cement their role as an independent power in a multipolar world. it's time to cry and avoid alienating our omnicidal overlords.
middle east monitor: “The Houthis now control strategic positions around the Bab el-Mandab Strait and are attacking energy facilities in Saudi Arabia; this further exacerbates the situation in international energy markets,” Merz said.

“The international community cannot allow the Houthis to hold shipping in the Red Sea hostage. We are consulting within the European Union and with partners in the region—on the contribution we can make together to end this conflict,” he added.

When asked about the future of Germany’s military advisory and training mission in Iraq, Merz noted that it will end this month, but Berlin would be ready to continue cooperation in different forms.

Fintech groups are seeking to capitalise on the growing number of Americans who struggle to pay for housing, offering “rent now, pay later” loans as the cost of living pushes up demand for short-term financing.

Affirm, a Nasdaq-listed company that is one of America’s biggest “buy now, pay later” lenders, recently partnered with fintech Esusu to pilot so-called rent-split loans. Three other companies that specialise in these housing loans told the FT that their customer bases were rapidly expanding.

Rent-split lenders cover a tenant’s monthly payment to their landlord and receive the money back in instalments spread over the course of the month, in effect splitting up the borrower’s rent bill into smaller sums."

first as tragedy then 2-3 times a week as farce
financial times screenshot: Oil prices tumbled on Wednesday on hopes that the US and Iran could be close to a deal for peace in the Middle East.

Donald Trump said the war with Iran would end and the Strait of Hormuz would be “open to all” if Tehran strikes a deal with Washington, raising expectations of an agreement to stop the conflict.

But he warned the US otherwise would launch renewed strikes at “a much higher level and intensity than before”.

Oil prices had tumbled earlier on Wednesday after Axios reported that Washington had presented Iran with a one-page framework for ending the war, anticipating a response from Iran in the next 48 hours.

For Iran, the prospect that a naval blockade will force its government into serious negotiations is dim. Technically, the government still has control over its oil and gas production, including the ability to scale it up or down. Even if the blockade cuts into revenues and damages production capacity in the long term, why would economic misery sway a regime with a long record of prioritising dogma over wellbeing, and with its back to the wall? At a minimum, that will take time."

insight and analysis from the financial times: iran is not in asia. the us may be eating shit in iran, but china should fear our impulsive, ai-powered baby killing
screenshot of a financial times 'analysis' piece from some hoover institute goon.

"The shortcomings are plain to see. A war with unclear objectives lacks bipartisan Congressional support and is unpopular with voters. It has ruptured relations with Nato. If it is sustained, surging oil prices will boost Russia’s revenue by over $80bn annually, more than the Kremlin’s entire 2025 budget deficit. US military resources have been drawn away from Asia, supposedly the priority. Munitions inventories that would be essential in a war with China have been run down, with at least a fifth of Tomahawk missiles and a third of Thaad interceptors used up. Cheap drones blowing up data centres in the UAE and gas plants in Qatar are staggeringly expensive to stop. The war has cost America $9bn a week.

Simultaneously, America’s strengths have been on awesome display. In three weeks it has destroyed most of Iran’s air force, navy and military industrial complex, after earlier striking its nuclear facilities. Many of Iran’s leaders have been killed. AI targeting has helped direct 9,000 strikes. While air power cannot change a regime, its ferocity and precision appear greater than ever. A disregard for the UN, and most allies, makes decision-making faster."

i dunno man i don't think shakespeare thought nobles had special robes that doubled as flotation devices. i think maybe your clothes being intact after a shipwreck could be useful for a lot of other reasons.
footnote from "the tempest" where the editor bizarrely suggests the phrase "sustaining garments" means that shakespeare thought their clothes helped them float: "it is possible that shakespeare, wrongly, imagined that clothes are buoyant enough to contribute to survival in the sea."
