MEP Evelyne Regner asked ECB President Christine Lagarde how far the @ecb.europa.eu can take #inequality into account. Her answer: price stability comes first, and ECB research may help others decide what to do. Good question. Limited answer. 🎥

The richest 10% own 75% of the world's wealth, and the gap is growing. 📈 In a new blog, @joefherb.bsky.social explains why that's a problem for central banks too: when a few hold most of the wealth, monetary policy tools lose power.👇 positivemoney.org/uk-eu/update...

Inequality is a growing crisis - including for central banks
Monetary policy can reduce or worsen inequality. But rising inequality also threatens the transmission of monetary policy, and accordingly, central banks.

While climate and ecological breakdown wreaks havoc around the world, central banks (and govts) are hollowing out green economic transition to a technocratic and rhetorical husk. Any 'transition' without workers and vulnerable communities at the centre is destined to fail.

Fossil fuels are the biggest driver of #inflation in almost every EU country. The ECB's response - hiking rates - makes it worse, choking off investment in the renewables that could shield us from these shocks. New research from our friends @neweconomics.bsky.social: euobserver.com/237215/fossi...

NEW: fossil fuel shocks pose the biggest inflation risk to European countries - but European Central Bank (@ecb.europa.eu) policy, including this week's interest rate hike, is blocking progress towards the green transition needed to avoid future shocks. 🧵

The ECB raised rates again. But the root cause of this inflation is obvious: a gas bottleneck from the US-led conflict in Iran pushed energy prices up 14.3%. Rate hikes don't fix that - they just make it harder to invest in the clean energy that would stabilise prices. #fossilflation
