And it's not like our car industry has been crushing it. They pretty aggressively squandered every bailout and protection we implemented to save them for the last 30 years. If China is making better batteries than us, better car frames than us, then the game is already up right?

That proximity affords a lot of competitive advantages. So either this represents a dilution of that advantage as they spread production globally, and/or it's an opportunity to build up complimentary industries on the back of another country's business (what they did to us in the first place). We've been trained from birth to hate this, but isn't it kind of good actually? A big part of why China outcompetes in manufacturing is consolidation; the wheel factory and the seat factory are right next to the car factory, which is how things used to be here too. (1/2)
