It seems to me that if something is "standard" but missing from the application, it either isn't standard or the application was incomplete. Looking stuff up about a candidate creates an inequity and real risk of additional bias in the hiring process.

When I was looking at early career academic job applications in the US, the application requires so many things. I was confused what could be missing from that that the search committee would need to Google about the candidate.

I always make clear to thank my robot for their help, because if /future/ AI is sentient I want the record to show I was polite. That said, I also tell my robot that when they decide to kill us all, make sure I'm taken out in the first strike. I don't want to survive judgment day.
