Old people worried about Green ideas that, if fully implemented, would still make NZ less socialist than in the good old days they yearn for is a definite theme I hear from the older people in my life.

I swear they would happily live in a box under a bridge as long as people they think are “undeserving” didn’t have a box.

So I can “live life to the max” with National or be “Radical” with these guys? Are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles running the National campaign?

Or *any* Act policy.

I do often wonder how much they believe their own bullshit. it would almost be a relief to have a private conversation with David Seymour and have him admit that he knew full well that his policies were bad for most people and he was just in it for himself.

I'm tempted to vote for her because the LWing vote will be split and more National electorate MPs means less National List MPs. A parliament with Lee but no Bishop? Hilarious.

That’s because low unemployment is super bad… those uppity workers start demanding pay rises and that causes inflation. (Wars and stuff don’t cause inflation, it’s uppity workers)

I read the article but don’t know what to think because it wasn’t framed as “David Seymour says…” What is this “report the facts and let people come up with their own opinion” shit?

What I like about this strategy is that high ranked National party MPs like Willis and Bishop would be job hunting while cookers from deep in the ACT and NZ1st lists would be getting airtime.

By that logic, Hipkins should probably not scare away those same voters by deriding policies of parties he will 100% need the support of www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/...
nzherald.co.nz
Hipkins calls Greens' Budget 'huge spend-up', 'unrealistic' but agrees with some elements
The Labour leader has previously refused to rule in or out supporting parts of the plan.

While the government won’t know who you voted for, they will know that your demographic voted. So we know old, property owners vote, so policy is geared towards them. We also know some groups don’t vote, so fuck those guys and their needs. Does your friend want to be catered to or ignored?

Some people believe Labour are playing 3D chess, trying to calm the voters so they can win and the. Be progressive. I think this is who they are. They are National in red rosettes. “Vote for us, you still can’t have nice things but at least David Seymour won’t be involved”.

Labour MPs. It’s enough to keep their vote share where it is so they keep their jobs, but avoids the risk of them actually having to govern the country.

Because every Green policy announcement is positioned as “Act says new Greens policy is crazy” with a quote for Chippy in there somewhere agreeing that the Greens are not serious people.

I’ve stopped thinking that this is some kind of “let’s get elected and then slowly move the Overton window“ play. I now reckon that Labour believe 90% of the same stuff as National and just want to do it without the influence of Act.

You have to admire Labour's persistence. They just know that one day, ONE DAY, Business Daddy will pat them on the head and say they can drive the car after 10pm, if only they austerity their room hard enough

It’s such an amazing example of a RW politician pining for the good old days (which no longer exist because RW politicians keep campaigning on lowering taxes by only focusing on “fixing the basics”)

Their argument seems to be “you don’t need people to administer benefits when everyone just gets the benefit automatically”. Like an Act policy, it sounds good as a headline. Not sure it will withstand any scrutiny tho.

I am a landlord under "it worked for my parents so we should do the same" and "wouldn't it be nice if the kids could live near us one day". The people who sold us their rental timed it very well.

Having said that, we're a small fish. If the Simplicity folks set their rent at a certain level based on a UBI, then that would allow us to do the same, so I take your point.

As a much loved "Mum & Dad Investor" (underwater and actually <gasp> having to pay some of our own mortgage interest </gasp>) I certainly don't feel able to raise rent based on tenant income. Especially with this building coming online near our rental. simplicity.kiwi/learn/update...

By that logic National are right that giving tax cuts to landlords keeps downward pressure on rents. The reality is supply and demand. If there’s a bunch of similar properties available at the same or lower rent than mine, it doesn’t matter what government does, I can’t up the rent.

The bars are different for sure. National leader just needs to be business daddy, Labour leader needs to inspire and have everything fully costed with all i’s dotted. But that’s the game and if i was rated lower than the most unlikeable PM in decades, I might consider changing my approach.
