This is just the side-view of the TOS-era USS Enterprise in front of the brown planet that it usually orbits when Kirk is doing his captain's log supplementing.

This slide was in a talk about the same optics, conveniently named the Bigger Beamsplitter. LOL! A few days ago I stumbled across the same box at LIGO Livingston and instantaneously recognized it as the one behind the random guy's pickup truck. (I was vacuum cleaning the floor. More LOL!)
A slide on a presentation titled "Final Step: Shipping"
There's a picture of a pickup truck with a big black box harnessed down on the trunk. A text box points to the truck saying "Random guy's pickup", and another text box pointing to the box saying "Priceless optic".

As a result of this, California DMV cancelled driving licensees of 300 thousand people a few months ago, and dared calling it only affecting a limited number of costumers. In my case, it took me months to figure out what was the issue, and I never got my California DL back.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 31, 2025

What you need to know: The California DMV is proactively taking steps to keep all Californians’ REAL IDs compliant and is notifying some individuals that they must take action to keep their REAL ID valid. This will affect a limited number of customers, approximately 1.5% of California REAL ID holders.

Sacramento — Following a self-initiated, proactive review of its data systems, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) identified a fraction of REAL ID records that require updates to ensure continued compliance with federal REAL ID regulations. The DMV is informing affected individuals of the steps they need to take.

Only customers who receive a notice — approximately 1.5% of those holding California-issued REAL IDs — need to take action in the coming weeks and months. All other REAL ID holders do not need to take any action.

I've been at the LIGO Livingston for 5 weeks now, and the experience has been mesmerizing. People are nice, and the science is mind-blowing. It's a shame that we can create such amazing public-serving facilities, with people who absolutely love to do the work, but instead use the money on wars.

My trip seems to be very Star Trek themed. I'm reading this fantastic book by @chanda.blacksky.app which is full of ST references, my water bottle has a ST sticker by @reforest-kelley.bsky.social, and I have a few episodes of ST: Discovery downloaded on my computer to watch along the way.
Me sitting on the train coach, having Chanda's new book, The Edge of Space-time in hand. My water bottle is in front of me, with a sticker portraying Spock, quoting "The needs of the many outweigh the greed of the few". There's also a git logo sticker on my bottle.

I so much feel like I'm the worst graduate student, researcher, and friend ever. So here are the comments that I got this quarter from my students. Let's hope that bragging in public about how good a teacher I am will cheer me up a little bit.
Q7 - What are some of your TA's strengths?
He explained a lot of the concepts that we went over in class. If we had any questions, he would try his best to answer to the best of his knowledge and if he wasn’t sure, he would figure it out in that moment, which also helps us see the thought process behind solving problems. He was always very inviting and encouraging of participation and questions which was very nice to see.
Extremely kind, welcoming, and understandable during discussions.Q9 - What might your TA do to improve?
I don’t think he had anything lacking. Q8 - Do you have any additional comments?
I really enjoyed having him as my TA as he was very insightful with his explanations and methods of solving problems.

All of his obviously bigoted ideas aside, it's good to mention that this person was also (allegedly) involved (as a co-author) in one of the most famous research frauds of the past few years. He was the co-author of multiple papers that were retracted because of data fabrication and falsification.

Back to your question. Do we just vary the mirror positions to find a better configuration? Not exactly. Setting the lengths of LIGO's optical cavities (and keeping them there) is a very delicate process. See this schematic optical layout of aLIGO as an example. There are so many different -->
A schematic optical layout of aLIGO. For my argument, the point is to show how complicated this machine is. And this is just one part of the story.

detector works, and nowadays a lot of computer simulations. See this sensitivity plot of different (proposed) detector as an example. Here, lower mean more sensitive. Our detectors are mostly limited by quantum noises nowadays. So most of what we are developing is to lower those noises.
Sensitivity curves of LIGO and a few other proposed detectors. The horizontal axis is frequency, and the vertical one is strain noise. You can interpret the curves as the sensitivity of the detectors to GWs. The lower the curves, the more sensitive each detector is.
The gray curve (aLIGO O3) was the previous observational run of Advanced LIGO (before the last one) and ended in 2020. The latest LIGO run (O4) is not shown in the plot. If it was, it would have been somewhere below the gray curve. LIGO A+ is the next upgrade of the LIGO detector. Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope are both proposed next-generation detectors in the US and Europe, respectively. NEMO is a proposed Australian detector. Voyager is a proposal for a Cryogenic upgrade to LIGO.
For most of the frequency band in this plot (above ~200 Hz), the sensitivity of the detector is limited by quantum noises. These noises in high frequency regime could be understood as photon shot noise. So, if we want to make our detector more sensitive, we need to somehow lower the quantum noise, and that is what most of our development efforts is focused on.
This plot is form the Cosmic Explorer website (https://cosmicexplorer.org/sensitivity.html) and is a bit out of the date.

Similarly, see this other plot. This one shows the astrophysical reach of Cosmic Explorer to compact binary mergers. see the alt text for more information about it. It shows the reach of Cosmic Explorer, showing its sensitivity to events that can't bee seen by LIGO due to their low amplitude.
A plot showing the astrophysical reach of the Cosmic Explorer to compact binary mergers, by Alex Nitz. The vertical axis shows the age of the universe (see the timeline on the right hand side), and the horizontal axis is the total mass of the two merging objects.
Different points on the plot represent different categories of sources of GWs. you can see a few of the current events seen by LIGO down there, marked with stars and names starting with GW. There are all these other *predicted* sources above them that are currently out of the reach for our detectors. the contour lines represent the Signal to Noise ratio for the cosmic explorer. the lowest line (SNR=1000) means that this detector will be able to observe events like the ones that we have already seen with an absolutely crazy quality of signal. The other lines show that the detector will be sensitive enough to see all these other predicted sources, if they exist.

with this and that frequency, amplitude, shape, and distribution. LIGO (and other ground-based Laser Interferometer detectors) are only tailored towards a narrow region of this parameter space. For example, see this frequency spectrum of different sources and detectors.
We see a schematic plot of the gravitational wave spectrum, with the sources on the top half, and detectors on the bottom. A horizontal line in the middle represents the frequency/period of the GW. Lower frequencies on the left, and higher ones on the right.
On the very right side, we have the ground-based interferometers, like LIGO and Virgo. Above it, we see some of the sources that can create the waves in this frequency range. This picture is from NASA gsfc, so the part about the space interferometers is highlighted.
