You can disprove "people thought the Earth was flat" in the first few sentences of Pliny's Natural History. Every sailor knew the world was round; you only had to see land appear and disappear below the horizon enough. And Eratosthenes did a pretty sound calculation of its size 200 years earlier.

It's a formula that worked well for them. "Police Squad!" lifted its plots from a nearly forgotten TV series called M Squad. They'd use them as a framework to hang jokes on. Saved them from coming up with police stories, since nobody paid attention to that part anyway.

The message on the sign doesn't reach people who favor the death penalty because they don't see it that way. They see it as a deterrent and a remedy (get rid of the wolf in your midst), not as a moral lesson. (Source: I used to favor the death penalty.)

When he took office in Jan 2017, the initiation fee at Mar A Lago doubled from $100K to $200K. He didn't waste a moment collecting money from people who wanted to be near the US President. Everyone yapped about him not taking his salary. He replaced that many, many times over right then and there.
