I'm gonna argue anything that Catherine O'Hara chose to be a regular on is, by definition, cool. (See also: the newly established Bryan Cranston Coked Out of His Mind rule.) Poker Face is grandfathered in by the Columbo is Cool Rule. :) (I'll grant you that's kind of a Peter Falk thing.)

I'd argue Hacks was that show the last few years. Poker Face for a brief moment. The Studio is now. It's absolutely lousy with guest stars. (Only Murders too, though it's showing its age a bit.)

This piece by Colson Whitehead is one of my favorite things ever written. I've shared it many times with folks over the years. It was published two months after 9/11, and I believe it's one of the greatest things ever put to pen about grief, memory, and time. www.nytimes.com/2001/11/11/m...
I started building my New York on the uptown No. 1 train. My first city memory is of looking out a subway window as the train erupted from the tunnel on the way to 125th Street and palsied up onto the elevated tracks. It's the early 70's, so everything is filthy. Which means everything is still filthy, because that is my city and I'm sticking to it. I still call it the Pan Am Building, not out of affectation, but because that's what it is. For that new transplant from Des Moines, who is starting her first week of work at a Park Avenue South insurance firm, that colossus squatting over Grand Central is the Met Life Building, and for her it always will be. She is wrong, of course -- when I look up there, I clearly see the gigantic letters spelling out Pan Am, don't I? And of course I am wrong, in the eyes of the old-timers who maintain the myth that there was a time before Pan Am.

What’s worse is not only did he have the back pain, but he died of emphysema, which seems like one of the most vicious combinations of life-withering conditions I can think of.

One of the loveliest songs to come out of Dolly, Linda and Emmylou's Trio albums is this heavenly cover of To Know Him Is To Love Him. They all sounded so great and looked so happy. (Fun fact: this video was directed by George Lucas, Linda's serious boyfriend at the time.) youtu.be/IRBZN8V2Fa4...

I was just talking to a friend today about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - new books every month, totally for free, for kids ages 1-5. My son was part of the program - this is a copy of the letter that came with his last book, right after his 5th birthday.

The one thing that brings me solace is that Dolly had many hundreds of unreleased songs, and at least since 2019 she started recording vocals for all of them, hoping that producers would arrange them and release them after she left us. Her art isn’t done with us yet.

Also I saw found out recently that Nikos Kazantzakis wrote a sequel to the Odyssey where he pals around with Jesus, Don Quixote and an incarnation of the Buddha, and has him wind up menaced by an iceberg in Antarctica and now I want Scorsese to take a shot at that.

A thing that was criticized a lot was the choice to let his cast speak in their New Yawk accents and what not, but I love the approach. Scorsese said at the time that Deimotic Greek was a working-class accent, and he felt like his choice was more accurate and immediate.

Steve Jobs was awful in many ways, but his email near the end of his life, summarizing all the things that come from other people that make life worth living - food, clothing, medicine, art, law, language - was an act of humility this crop of techbros is fundamentally incapable of understanding.

I don’t think they’re equating it to the size - obviously this is much worse with a far greater concentration of wealth - so much as the sense of inevitability and the ridiculous plethora of signs that this industry has failed and they’re triaging the shit out of it.

A fair number have been actively bringing up the dot com implosion for at least the last six months. When it happens, it may be when China blows past us in every economic metric. Permanently. The public buy-in is huge bc the govt steers it hard. There won't be a comparable cratering there.

I miss intermissions. The theater I grew up with in Ukiah would put in an intermission in ANY film that didn't have it, whatever the length. (I can still tell you exactly the point they put in the intermission for ROCKY.)

I got to see One Battle After Another in true, glorious VistaVision at the Coolidge Corner in Cambridge - they have a full 70mm setup too - and I agree abt their potential as large format venues. It doesn’t solve the problem of not being able to build new IMAX projectors, but it’s still wonderful.

Yup. They're hiring two types of people: the defiantly illiterate who can't even pass an open book test (literally), and people who tortured animals when they were kids and worked their way up.

I'm gonna defend the New York part of it. I don't hate the rest of it, it's sort of meh, but I would've loved the hell out of a version where they never left the city. Them trying to sell "Little Darlin" to an aghast audience was one of the funniest things I saw in the 80s.

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

I’m torn bc my Switch library is entirely digital - but I felt like that was appropriate for a portable machine. This is a lot more distressing. BTW, the real reason they’re doing it? There’s a huge shortage of UHD media. We’ve talked abt this in movie collector forums. This is a desperation move.

It's not even like it's a Waymo with a kind of ridiculous amount of miles on the road at this point and much better tech. Tesla can't even keep their purpose-designed robotaxis on the road in Austin bc of how dangerous they are. Imagine what their consumer-grade models are like.

Those who are most likely to be victims of these plans are often who most desperately want to sign up. My mom, right before she went into the last three or four years of her final tailspin, would talk obsessively about them, fueled by ads. It was all I could do to steer her away.

Bush put together the task force designed to quickly respond to pandemics, the one Trump dismantled and could've saved the million+ American lives that died of COVID and multiples more internationally. Bush IS a monster, but that alone makes Trump exponentially worse. 21 mil dead on his watch.

I'm kind of the opinion that it's not even the product, it's the salespeople. Like, positivity about AI is now plummeting below 30% in the US. In China, it's above 85%, according to Al Jazeera. (And specifically, less than 10% of the Chinese people polled believe AI will destroy jobs.)
