That's 1.8 MJ/kg in SI units or about 20 pico square lights

The key difference is between phenomenology and metaphysics. From a phenomenological point of view, AI is intelligent because it presents to us as intelligent, regardless of the "underlying" metaphysics.

I'm squarely in the first position, however, I think it's important to note that one cannot get from there to any kind of "subjectivity" or "consciousness" or "qualia" or "interiority" or AI, or in short, any reason we should ethically care about their "wellbeing".

Illustration is anything AI can do competently (i.e., no-one can tell any difference in quality in a blind test); art is everything else.

Yeah there are basically three factions: boosters, doomers, and deniers. The doomers and deniers both want to restrict AI growth but cannot co-operate because of political and culture war reasons, which are the more powerful.

Software devs who use a compiler for all the coding are more accurately called "customers" Since that's not their work and they're just pushing their responsibility onto something else.

A fun thing about human brains is once you learn even one fucking thing about how they work, you understand they don't think. They don't reason. They don't understand. They do impulses with neurons to move muscles.

I do not like the term "AGI": as as far as I'm concerned we've seen a growing level of bona fide general intelligence for a while. Although holy fuck Fable 5.1 and Astra are clearly huge advances. It's not the Singularity. It's not the Omnissiah. But we're in a new Industrial Revolution, ppl.

The problem with "clanker" is not that it denies the personhood (of AI) the way most slurs do, but rather the opposite: it constructs "AI beings" as a kind of semi-person that one can and should hate.

This is the problem with AI antis. They don't even use AI so they don't even hate it properly.

Right, maybe there should be an inquiry into those who enabled Arday's mendacity rather than into those who revealed it.

The cause of the controversy is that good-enough cheap goods of every kind are one of the major successes of capitalism, so of course lefties are going to reflexively deny it.

AI denial does function well as a low stakes tracer dye for how much groupthink is in a community. If you see a high frequency of afflicted people, that community hasn't ingested any info other than social signalling in a decade.

OK let me explain "gentrification" in three easy steps. 1. Rich people want to live in your city. And because they're rich, they can and they're going to.

Certain people loudly committed to the notion that AI is useless at a time when that seemed at least possible, and then underwent a kind of slow "frog-boiling" as it slowly and gradually became less reasonable, but never found a single sharp excuse to re-evaluate.

Empathy for (checks notes) a bank executive who dumped garbage onto the street and stole city property getting the entirely predictable and probably regulation-mandated consequences of her actions.

This is so beautiful. The Baltics is where traditional pagan / polytheist religion lasted the longest, and even today feels the most "credible" in a cultural sense. I want to do this. Next year, even.

Folks, please be cautious relying on so-called "expert" humans for medical advice. While they can often give good results, their training is deficient and they can act defensive when challenged. ALWAYS check their output with a real LLM.

I feel bad for Stancil even though he's rather to the left of me generally. It's a kind of ambient Gish Gallop: basically the "garbage left" generates a huge amount of bullshit and the average person ends up assuming that some of it must be true or "in the middle" when in fact exactly none of it is.

Disagree with this assessment. It conflates "Orban is a bad PM" with "Orban will not concede when voted out", quite different things. The "threat", the "massive concerted effort" and the "overcoming" all took place within ordinary proper constitutional democratic function.

I took Tagamet (cimetidine) when I got shingles and it cleared it up. Literally saw improvement within 24h, the blistering reversed, and I ended up with no permanent effects. Obviously it was a gamble to try something that had only "suggestive" evidence in its favour, but it happened to work out.

This is bullshit. There is no "hypocrisy" because copyright is not a matter of ethics (except very loosely), it is a matter of law. The precise aspects of copyright such as terms (14 + 14? Life + 70?), "fair use" exemptions, and so on, are all defined by laws, not ethics.

"Everything is political" is true in the rather trivial sense of "everything can be looked at through a political frame", but very often it's not the most useful frame.
