Made this thread with excerpts from this very partisan take because I do think the Yemeni republican line gets lost in Western discourse dominated by Houthi agitprop There's a lot of history underlining the Yemen conflict. The Imamate. Revolution. The Southern Issue. It's important to know it.

The Saudi-Houthi conflict only seems to draw attention because of its implications for Iran and the United States, but it is a disaster for so many Yemenis. @apnews.com’s Fatma Khaled on the tens of thousands now fleeing the Houthi offensive: apnews.com/article/yeme...

Tens of thousands flee as Iran-backed rebels draw Yemen into the wider war
The lightning advance of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes in Yemen. Many are struggling to find food and shelter.

Among the degrees that have been cut at Edinburgh are Persian Studies (and Persian and Middle Eastern Studies), and Africa and International Development. If only there was any need for specialists in any of these areas in the current state of affairs.

Not a 9-county Ulster but the UDA or some elements thereof were certainly into an independent Northern Ireland at one point.

Also generally not great for anyone when their country gets (further) taken over by theocratic reactionaries with a world-class record of human rights abuses.

I was amazed by how nice it sounded when I moved to Belgium, having never particularly liked the sound of Dutch as I had heard it until then.

I don't think I've ever come across this before and I had trouble persuading my brain not to read it as 'precede' (given that there was a verbal noun available to support that reading too) even after referring back to your tweet.

I think pasteurisation is at a much lower temperature. But if you're doing it at home I think most people just boil or near boil it? Easier to be sure you're getting it right.

Raw milk is fine! You just have to boil it and it's kind of a pain. I used to live somewhere this was standard. But these people seem to want to drink it without boiling it and, like, where on earth did they get that idea from and why?

My guess is it still has it for young Irish people (though so does Berlin), it's still a great city full of opportunity and we don't need visas, but the broader vibe, the way it was also that for young Italians and Poles and all sorts of other nationalities, I wonder about that.

Strictly speaking it would be Ireland only when you're speaking English and Éire otherwise:
100
Pól Ó Gráda @polrua.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
I think the objection to Éire was that it was being used to refer specifically to the 26 counties. Now that people blithely use 'Ireland' to refer to the 26 counties as well, maybe it's time to get Éire back into use?
