Political, economic and policy stuff. An unrepentant guitar gear hoarder. You know who I am. A social democrat on the beats - a libertarian between the human, civil and political rights sheets. The stupidity in this country is exhausting. Moreton Bay

A legitimate photo and caption from a legitimate news story. Tasmania - you're not even trying anymore
Picture of a forlorn woman looking like the admission shot from the Reality TV show Cheaters, with a caption reading "Zelinda Sherlock apologised and says she misunderstood the policy surrounding the snacks. (ABC News: Kate Nickels)"

Part 3. Now - sure, no one reads the news. But it becomes the base content for social media and the usual brainrot. Wall to wall nihilism and doomerism. This was just today, off one front page, off one site.

The biggest problem with Australia is that our the media hates the country and everything must be bad always at all times. Here is today's example from just the front page of Murdoch's NewsDotcom. So many examples it needs a thread!

But then we'd have to be adults about it - and the country isn't good at being adults. For what it's worth, this is my view of Australia's primary strategic interests

If you're going for quilted maple, search around the reclaimed wood stuff. When it sits for a hundred years or so it gets a 3D look rather than the bubbles of 2D. This maple is about 200 years old off what looks like a 250 year old tree (before it became part of a church (orginally))

I checked out a bunch of compressors today. Man, the NUX Komp Core Deluxe MKII Compressor made me raise my eyebrows. It'll do both old fashioned squash through to modern studio compressions. for $120 AUD! It was a better compressor than some stuff with a 4 in front of it.

There is certainly foreign influence operations run by Israel in Australia about anti-semitism as a foreign policy objective, but to use that as bulwark to say there is no antisemitism on the left is a fantasy. Just one example from tonight

I haven't done anything to mine for nearly 4 years. Once you get it sorted for the sounds in your head, rather than the itchiness of your wallet, it gets pretty stable. When I have do things that don't require a space shuttle, I just use my Helix or make up a quick 5 pedal board.

A Catahoula is a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog (one of yours!) - another breed with enormous intelligence. My boy is 80 pounds of Catahoula stuffed into a 35 pound bag of Kelpie

She was a unique dog . If we had friends around, she'd sit on a chair around the table with the rest of us and participate. She'd make an entrance to a room for attention, and if no one paid attention, she'd go back and do it again with dramatic flair to gather some. Best trainer of young dogs too

Via the Guardian, all up, that's a pretty good day
With that, we will wrap the blog for the evening. We’ll be back first thing tomorrow – take care of yourselves.

Until then, these were today’s biggest news headlines:

The opposition leader, Sussan Ley, has said the Albanese government’s proposed hate speech and anti-vilification legislation appears “pretty unsalvageable” and rejected suggestions of hypocrisy by the Coalition after weeks of calls for new laws to tackle antisemitism.

The Greens have said the party will not support the government’s hate speech bill “in its current form”.

The head of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry has called on the opposition to rethink its opposition to the government’s hate speech laws and seek amendments from Labor.

Allegra Spender has urged the Coalition to follow through on their calls for “urgent action” in the wake of the Bondi terror attack.

The Adelaide festival has reinstated its invitation to Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah to Adelaide writers’ week for 2027 and issued an unreserved apology amid the firestorm over the decision to remove her from its program.

Abdel-Fattah said she accepts the apology, but says it won’t be a “quick fix” to repair damage done.

The South Australian premier, Peter Malinauskas, said he was informed of the new board’s decision to apologise to Abdel-Fattah, but he did not agree with that decision.

Major demonstrations in Sydney planned for 26 January could still go ahead even if a declaration restricting protests is extended beyond that date, as police confirm they are working with different organisers on contingencies.

"Frydenberg 'deeply offended' by question on politics" Fun fact: Since 2014, national public approval of Frydenberg among polling respondents AFTER screening for the "Do you know who this bloke is" thing, was underwater every time, every year, until he was kicked out of his own seat 8 years in.
Josh Frydenberg takes issue with Sarah Ferguson's question about politics. This is what she asks:

"It is widely viewed as inevitable that you will return to politics. How do we not see this through a political lens, that you're making a personal case against the minister?"

He says he is "deeply offended" by the question.

"That is an insult to say there is any political motivation in this. No, Sarah, the reality is this. I am an Australian who has to have personal security because my life is in danger in this country, and I was the treasurer of this country," he said.

"My children go to a school where there are armed guards outside. When I visit a Jewish care centre there are armed guards outside. When I send my kids to sporting clubs there are police cars out there and police tape.

"Why should we live with this? If I'm not going to speak out, who is? If not now, when? If not me, who? This was an attack on Jewish Australians."

PM must clarify if he intends to adopt plan to combat antisemitism: Segal
Courtney Gould profile image
By Courtney Gould

Antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal has called on the prime minister to clarify whether he intends to fully implement a plan she handed down in July.

The plan makes sweeping recommendations that would have consequences for police, universities, media outlets, arts institutions and the wider Australian culture.

But the government has yet to formally respond to the recommendations, a move called into question by Jewish leaders following Sunday's Bondi attack.

Speaking with Sky News, Segal says she wants the "government to make a statement about the implementation of that plan".

"Although there has been progress behind the scenes, I think that now the community is sufficiently concerned and anxious about this that there should be a formal statement about the implementation," Segal says.

"Of course the report could have been acted on further and faster, but that doesn't mean that opportunity is lost."

Narratives? Exploitative political narratives I hear you ask? Ah well, nevertheless
Australia's domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, examined Bondi gunman Naveed Akram six years ago for his close ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State group (IS) terrorism cell, the ABC understands.

Naveed Akram, 24, and his father Sajid Akram, 50, killed at least 15 people yesterday evening when they opened fire on the Chanukah by the Sea event.

The ABC understands investigators from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) believe the gunmen had pledged allegiance to the IS terrorist group.

An IS flag was found in the men's car at Bondi Beach, according to a senior JCTT official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official said ASIO took an interest in Naveed Akram six years ago, after police foiled plans for an IS terrorist attack.

The ABC understands ASIO started looking into the man soon after the July 2019 arrest of IS terrorist Isaak El Matari in Sydney.

The official said Mr Akram was closely connected to Mr Matari, who is serving seven years' jail for planning an IS insurgency as the self-declared Australian commander of the terrorist group.

Mr Matari was part of an IS cell with several other Sydney men who have since been convicted of terrorist offences and were also close to Naveed Akram, according to sources with close knowledge of the matter.

ASIO director-general Mike Burgess said on Sunday that one of the gunmen was known to the agency, but did not specify which man.

"One of these individuals was known to us, but not in an immediate-threat perspective, so we need to look into what happened here," he said.

The Joint Counter Terrorism Team comprises ASIO, NSW Police, the Australian Federal Police and the NSW Crime Commission.

The ABC has contacted ASIO and NSW Police for comment.
