My babies. I love all guitars, but Tele’s have my heart. The very first mass-produced electric guitar (1954), the Fender Telecaster is a masterwork of design and ‘form follows function.’ There have been many subsequent alterations in guitar design, but in all these decades it’s never been bettered.

A young boy wrote to CS Lewis and asked him for advice on writing well. For me, learning not only to write well, but to (more importantly) communicate well, has been my secret weapon. I cultivated it also in my son—the ability to communicate effectively. Such a crucial and oft overlooked skill.

It is very hard to give any general advice about writing.
Here's my attempt.
December 14, 1959
(r) Turn off the Radio.
(2) Read all the good books you can, and avoid nearly all maga-zines.
(3) Always write (and read) with the ear, not the eye. You shd. hear every sentence you write as if it was being read aloud or spoken. If it does not sound nice, try again.
(4) Write about what really interests you, whether it is real things or imaginary things, and nothing else. (Notice this means that if you are interested only in writing you will never be a writer, because you will have nothing to write about...)
(5) Take great pains to be clear. Remember that though you start by knowing what you mean, the reader doesn't, and a single ill-chosen word may lead him to a total misunderstanding. In a story it is terribly easy just to forget that you have not told the reader something that he wants to know-the whole picture is so clear in your own mind that you forget that it isn't the same in his.
(6) When you give up a bit of work don't (unless it is hopelessly bad) throw it away. Put it in a drawer. It may come in useful later. Much of my best work, or what I think my best, is the rewriting of things begun and abandoned years earlier.
(7) Don't use a typewriter. The noise will destroy your sense of rhythm, which still needs years of training
(8) Be sure you know the meaning (or meanings) of every word you use.

It’s a weird thing about transphobia, and (I’m pretty sure) situations like racism and sexism in general. But transphobes are usually very quiet about it. Most of them would deny it. It’s the phone that never rings, the skilled worker who never gets hired, the emails that never come.

Spiders I have known in this late summer. Spiders are far and away the most fascinating animal on earth (imo). In another lifetime, I could have been an arachnologist. They study the entire family of arachnids and related invertebrates like scorpions and harvestmen. Mind blowing stuff.

These little assholes. Stink bugs. Twice a year, we get nailed by seasonal swarms of them—trying to get in the house or out of the house. They don’t bite, but are super annoying and big. And we live in the woods, so there’s tons of them. We pulled 20 or so from our bedroom curtains last week.

When I briefly met Harlan Ellison a million years ago, he was signing books in a university bookstore. I asked him what he was going to do that night. “Sit in my hotel room and stare at the wall,” he said.

"Wasting time" might be one of the strangest accusations we've ever invented. Apparently you can waste 2:00 p.m. by sitting under a tree doing nothing. The afternoon was going to pass either way. The Earth was going to rotate either way. But because you didn't convert those hours into money, errands or improvement, we decided the time itself was wasted. As if simply being alive isn't enough to justify an afternoon.

Stanley Kubrick and his longtime driver, Emilio D’Allessandro. They became great friends, and Emilio’s book STANLEY AND ME shows a different side to the director. Emilio liked cars and wasn’t much of a film buff, and never even saw Stanley’s movies until much later. They were just pals.
