I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

Who would have thought Labour would be at 30% and 6 points ahead of Farage earlier this year?? Andy Burnham's speech and his courage on taking on one of the most difficult issues of our time (Care) has been rewarded. Looks like getting closer the EU is popular too! Voters loathed the Tory party when they booted them out in 2024.They really needed to shake off their disgrace with humility and better ideas. They haven’t. They’ve doubled down. More Brexit, more austerity, more anti-immigration ugliness, more tedious arrogance… and no good reason to vote for them.
Party seems to have learnt nothing from 2024 defeat
John Oxley

The Conservative Party is keen to show it is now ready to return to government, two and a half years after a
historic defeat.Their self-soothing explanation posits that defeat came from not being able to do what they wanted

No such pivot is happening at the current conference. The Tories have come to Birmingham calling for a return to orthodoxy, with similar lines about cutting benefits and regulation. Even so, they seem trapped by the same contradictions
- pledging to cut benefits, but not the winter fuel payments and triple lock on pensions that go to their voters.
There is no "hug-a-hoodie" moment in Birmingham. The Conservative Party is not indicating that it has changed or seeking to broaden its appeal. It is doing the opposite: it is a party returning to its core, restating all the old ideas voters have rejected but louder.

Badenoch says Tories want policies ‘for everybody’ as she defends plan to let millionaires to get free childcare – UK politics live
Conservative leader defends plan to extend free childcare to high earners, as Tory conference begins in Birmingham today In a further exchange, Badenoch said that spending on the pensions triple lock was just “a ledger on the budget line”. Kuenssberg said Badenoch was wrong to dismiss it like that. State spending on pensions was £177bn, she said. The reason why is because what is going wrong in our economy is not lots of elderly people earning £10,000, £12,000 a year on the state pension. It is the huge number of people who can work, who don’t work. We’ve had different policies at different times. We go with what the leader does. I am the leader now and what I am saying is that our economy is not growing. Changing and moving around the triple lock does not create growth. In fact, if we were growing at 2 or 3%, nobody would be talking about the triple lock. Continue reading...
