“EVs and heat pumps will destroy cheap overnight electricity.” Will they? Britain has a huge opportunity to shift flexible electricity demand into the hours when the grid is least used. EVs aren’t necessarily the problem. They could be part of the solution.

Great Britain’s Day and Night Electricity Demand Gap - Policy Seed
Reading Time: 6 minutesExecutive summary Great Britain’s electricity demand remains substantially lower overnight than during the rest of the day. Analysis of every half-hour of National Energy System Operator demand data for 2025 shows that: The difference was most pronounced during winter. In January, average peak-period demand was more than 40% higher than overnight demand. Even during the […]

If electricity were genuinely affordable, would millions of households need to spend thousands of pounds on solar panels and home batteries just to reduce their bills? For some homes they make perfect sense. But they aren’t a substitute for fixing electricity pricing for everyone.

Why Solar Panels and Home Batteries Are Not the Solution for Everyone - Policy Seed
Reading Time: 4 minutesExecutive Summary Solar panels and home battery systems are excellent technologies that should play a significant role in the UK’s transition to clean electricity. However, they are not a realistic or affordable solution for every household. Many families simply cannot afford the upfront investment, while the financial return can take many years to recover. In […]

We’re proposing replacing the electricity standing charge with a £25/month Network Access Subscription. Obvious question: Wouldn’t that make some households worse off? It’s a fair challenge — so we’ve run the numbers.
policyseed.uk
Does the £25 Energy Subscription Make Electricity More Expensive? - Policy Seed
Reading Time: 4 minutesOur proposed domestic electricity tariff replaces the daily standing charge with a transparent £25 monthly energy subscription. At first glance, £25 a month may appear more expensive than the current electricity standing charge. But looking only at the fixed charge ignores the much larger saving created by reducing the electricity unit price. For most households, […]

Before you’ve switched on a light, boiled a kettle or charged your phone, you’ve already started paying for electricity. And the amount can depend on where you live. We mapped electricity standing charges across Britain 👇

What if domestic electricity pricing were simple? ⚡ 15p/kWh daytime electricity 🌙 7.5p/kWh overnight 🔌 A transparent network subscription 📉 No traditional standing charge That’s the idea behind our National Domestic Electricity Tariff.

National Domestic Energy Tariff Policy - Policy Seed
Reading Time: 18 minutesExecutive Summary Britain’s electricity market has become increasingly difficult for households to understand. Customers face standing charges, dozens of tariffs, regional pricing differences, time-of-use tariffs, export tariffs, fixed deals, variable deals and frequent price changes. This policy replaces complexity with a simple national electricity tariff that rewards efficient energy use while encouraging demand to move […]

Could electricity really cost 15p/kWh? That’s the target behind our energy policy. We’ve worked backwards through wholesale electricity, networks, suppliers and the costs currently loaded onto bills to ask whether 15p is achievable. Here’s our analysis 👇
policyseed.uk
Why a 15p Electricity Unit Price Is Achievable - Policy Seed
Reading Time: 8 minutesExecutive summary The proposed national domestic electricity tariff sets a target standard rate of 15p per kilowatt-hour. This is achievable because the policy fundamentally changes what the electricity unit price is required to pay for. Under the current system, household unit rates include much more than the electricity generated. Consumers also pay for network infrastructure, […]

When you pay 25p+ for a kWh of electricity, you’re not simply paying for electricity. You’re paying for networks, policy costs, balancing, supplier costs, legacy schemes and more. Understanding the bill is the first step towards reforming it.
policyseed.uk
Understanding Today’s Electricity Unit Price - Policy Seed
Reading Time: 2 minutesMany people assume that the price they pay for each unit of electricity is simply the cost of generating electricity. In reality, this is only part of the story. The current electricity unit price combines the cost of buying electricity with a wide range of other charges, including network costs, government policies, supplier operating costs […]

What should electricity actually cost in Britain? We think domestic electricity should cost around 15p/kWh — not 25p, 30p or more. So instead of starting with today’s complicated system, we’re asking a different question: What would have to change to deliver 15p electricity?

Energy & Net Zero - Policy Seed
Reading Time: < 1 minuteExecutive Summary Affordable, reliable energy is fundamental to economic growth, national security and improving living standards. This policy reforms the UK’s energy system to deliver lower prices for households and businesses while maintaining a secure, resilient and lower-carbon electricity network.

We need to understand useful energy vs wasted energy. A 90% gas boiler costs ~8.1p/kWh of useful heat. At 15p electricity, a heat pump with COP 3.5 delivers it for ~4.3p. Electrification doesn’t replace fossil energy 1:1. Better efficiency means we need far less energy.
What does 1 kWh off useful heat actually cost?

Removing VAT sounds attractive. But 5% off an expensive bill is still an expensive bill. VAT also gives the biggest cash saving to the households using the most electricity. Shouldn’t we tackle the price of electricity itself instead?

The energy industry keeps creating more tariffs. Tracker. Agile. EV. Cosy. Flux. Fixed. Variable. Does having dozens of tariffs create competition, or does it just make it harder for ordinary households to know which one is best?

Scotland can generate huge amounts of cheap wind power, but when the grid can’t move it south, consumers pay the price through constraint payments and higher TNUoS charges.

People say the UK energy market is competitive. Yet most suppliers charge almost the same price because the Ofgem price cap effectively becomes the market price. If everyone ends up charging roughly the same, how much competition is there really?

Wholesale prices jumped in 2022 and 2023 but they have dropped down but there's been a sneaky rise in policy and network costs.
000
PolicySeed UK @policyseed.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Wholesale electricity is often much cheaper than the price on your bill. So why are households paying around twice as much? Because your electricity bill includes network costs, policy costs, supplier costs and other charges that most people never see.
000
PolicySeed UK @policyseed.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
In 2025 the average wholesale prices of electricity was well below our proposed 15p/kWh peak rate. Let's pay for electricity not policy costs, not levies and let's supernate network costs.

The UK has some of the most expensive household electricity prices in the G7. Energy isn’t just another bill. It affects manufacturing, pubs, shops, hospitals and every household. If electricity is too expensive, can the UK really compete?
