I've seen this summed up as the idea that transfem children are dangerous men but transmasc adults are misled girls, which, yeah. We don't need to argue about who "has it worse". These are two facets of the same oppression, and it's one that is way broader in its scope than just trans people, even.

Ghost Trick is a very cute game with a big heart, lots of silliness, and some fun and weird puzzle mechanics. I feel like it didn't become very well-known in the DS era, aside from among certain sorts of nerds who'd already played all the Ace Attorney games, but it deserves more attention than that

Chicagoans: anyone want a ticket to Victorian Psycho tonight at the Music Box? 9:45 showing, but it's part of CIFF and they say that they'll start releasing empty seats as standby tickets at 9:30(!), which is new to me. (I'll most likely be there earlier for empanada dinner, which is optional.)

Not a recent observation but I'd forgotten to post: @annleckie.com's threads _and only her threads_ have lately been displaying to me as only the top post. I follow her just like I do many other posters-of-threads and I haven't seen this from anyone else. But I guess that 1/n is good for something?

An example of the thing I'm talking about. A short Ann Leckie thread only appeara with its first post (labeled 1/2), but above it a similar shoer David Cooper thread has both posts (with their 1/2 and 2/2 labels).

Intermixed is a post from Chicakō, revealing that I took this screenshot like three weeks ago.

I mean, conservative Christianity is a sturdy and powerful political force only when held up by the social factors (influential rich people, abusive families, etc.) that make it so. If those aren't in play then it's a house of cards re: what religious aspects need to be taken exactly how seriously.

I think there's an unstated aspect of that kind of taken-as-mandatory growing up is absorbing the idea that, if you don't, you're likely to materially suffer for it-- maybe in really big ways-- but absorbing it in an unacknowledged way so that you don't see society treating people this way as wrong.

Yeah it was a popular framing then. (And at other times too.) With my parents I get how they ended up there and missed the classism of it. They both had parents who were sort new to white assimilation and some of the most educated people in town despite not being financially better off. But still.

Your mom had/has a lot of wrong ideas. Anyway I would've been a geologist, but I think in my case I was right to conclude that I didn't have the endurance for that. At the time I just thought about the tedious fieldwork outdoors, but honestly the academia side would have eventually been a lot too.

(It wasn't enough to counteract the loneliness, or to stop me from to some extent changing how I acted in the hope of fitting in-- especially during the dark times of adolescence. I never had it in me to endure without social connections at all. Also, ridiculous how I missed the gender of it all.)

My parents encouraged me to frame everything as people being "dumb" and "jealous" because I was "smarter than them", and I don't think I need to explain how this is a really unhealthy worldview?? So I'm glad I had the early idea that being a weirdo was by default good and cool rather than shameful.

Because having _any_ positive associations with being different was the only counterweight I had for the various growing up milestones where it hit like a ton of bricks that the friendship and camaraderie I wanted were largely inaccessible at school, etc.. Usually for unacknowledged gender reasons.

I heard the idea of "weird" at a very young age and liked the idea of it applying to me, before I regularly had many outside-family interactions at all and thus didn't know people would find me weird (pejoratively). I think my parents tried to discourage me in this, but honestly it was good for me.
