the 12 yr old has been gone for four days with a friend on fall break, and as i pulled onto our dead end street, i was surprised to see he was already home and he made me jump out of my jeep so he could bear hug me before he and his brother made the walk to their buddy’s birthday sleepover party.

Phenomenology Friday “The implication is that all things, persons and objects are co-defining structures, dynamically changing through time and relation to their environment and the plurality which they themselves are at every moment.” Jessica Frazier. Gadamer on Being.

she gave us some of the high lonesome sound of bluegrass. she gave the old time sound of appalachia. but then she put csny’s ohio in the middle of her own dooley’s farm. and then she closed her encore with jefferson airplane’s white rabbit!

it’s one thing to hear it on the record. but watching little sister’s eyebrows raise right up off her forehead as Molly makes her runs up and down her fretboard is my new favorite thing.

but as every loving parent knows, there is a process of call and response that can help the child see beyond their immediate horizon. there is way to invite the child to step deeper into the wonder and complexity of the true world. but that process only works if it remains open and free to play.

as every child who has defied a parent deeply understands, in the end, no matter how much they want to, the parent cannot make you do anything.

me, once again placing my hand on Truth and Method: naïve scientism is, in fact, extremely bad and dangerous, and everyone who cares about education needs to understand there is no way to programmatically engineer a path that can guarantee student learning. it really is hermeneutics all the down.

yes. it is the logic of religious fundamentalism: an authoritative canon that is beyond question. and, just like in fundamentalist churches, only a certain interpretation is permitted, and any deviation is policed as heretical. it has trappings of liberal arts, but not the true vision of liberty.

though our little parish has now been some months without a priest, one of our members is an excellent lay preacher. his meditation on today’s gospel was inspired. heartfelt, welcoming, funny, and gentle but genuine challenge. keeps ya living.

it warms the cockles of my existential phenomenologist heart that this man sees so clearly what is at stake in this moment.
Tweet from Pope Leo XIV:

Intelligence must draw on memory. The mind must not simply compile data — as an algorithm now does more quickly than we can - but recall lived experiences, which contain depths of meaning that only the human soul can recognize, and connect more deeply with the goodness of these experiences. Everything that is good begins "with the Spirit" and thus possesses a breath, a dynamism and a sense of communion that, once experienced, are engraved upon the heart.

Pynchon looks out his apartment window as the day fades from the sky. As he turns, he spies the old phone on the sidetable. “Ah, Cormac,” he chuckles to himself, remembering the old calls. “I think you would’ve been pleased for Anne. She doesn’t like to clutter up the page with commas either.”

Carson is an excellent poet in her own right. But I am especially grateful for her translations of Sappho. Every semester she helps me persuade students they might like poems after all.
