happy Bandcamp Friday! it's a great day to support a musician you like, or else to discover something new. Last month, I released an album of lo-fi folk, jangle pop, and miniature soundscapes called The Autumn Tape. maybe you'd like to give it a listen? harrisonlemke.bandcamp.com/album/the-au...

talk about Phenomenology Friday:
Pope Leo:

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

we all came up to Nashville to hear @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social read from his new novel. he was heartfelt and hilarious, and it felt good to be in the room with this man who has given our family so many hours of great radio.

back in Sewanee for a conference for small parishes and our speaker said the church is not an organization in an economy, but an organism in an ecology, and, brother, that will preach.

i'm just a dad, but i don't think it is stupid or naive to want to live in a world where Bluey is at the top of everyone's list.

The Wire and Deadwood are about what happens to us when we fail to learn how to play house. Bluey is about learning to play house.

Annie Dillard, Meditative Author of ‘Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,’ Dies at 81 (Gift Article)
Her Thoreau-like account of journeys in the woods, published when she was 28, was the first of many ruminations on life and nature, good and evil.

perhaps my most delusional belief: i think i could persuade schmitz to give up his schtick if he came down to my neck of the woods for a while, if he went out fishing with me in my old boat, if he sat and ate bbq at my table.

the way to understand a piece like this from schmitz is that he lives in an urban, cosmopolitan millieu and the popularity of country music is a novelty to him. and so to explain it, he has to fit it into his volkish conception of america, whether or not that makes any actual sense.

many years later, when he was old and full of years, he would remember reading the Council of Elrond to his children, how their eyes had gleamed at the ancient names, how, when he closed the book, they had asked him to help them understand what they had just heard.

Jesse Thorn is always such a thoughtful interviewer, and this rebroadcast of his conversation with Dolly Parton is no exception. But Dolly's little bookend after the credits is a delight and a marvel.

“The way we are, we are members of each other. All of us. Everything. The difference ain't in who is a member and who is not, but in who knows it and who don't.”
“And by what you're proposing to do now you hope to make it right?”
"No! God damn it, Wheeler—excuse me, Hannah—no!
What is done is done forever. I know that. I'm saying that the ones who have been here have been the way they were, and the ones of us who are here now are the way we are, and to know that is the only chance we've got, dead and living, to be here together. I ain't saying we don't have to know what we ought to have been and ought to be, but we oughtn't to let that stand between us. That ain't the way we are. The way we are, we are members of cach other. All of us. Everything. The difference ain't in who is a member and who is not, but in who knows it and who don't. What has been here, not what ought to have been, is what I have to claim. I have to be what I've been, and own up to it, no secret faults. Because before long I'm going to have to look the Old Marster in the face, and when He says,
“Burley Coulter!” I hope to say “Yes, Sir. Such as I am, that's me?”
And now he leans forward and, the hat brim clenched in the outer three fingers of his right hand, hooks his forefinger into Wheeler's vest. He does not pull, but only holds, as gently as possible given the hand’s forthrightness and the rigor in the crook of the old finger.
"And, Wheeler, one thing I am is the man who cared about Kate Helen Branch—all her life, you might say."
"You loved her," Wheeler says.
"That's right."
"You were a husband to her—in all but name."
"That's right."
"And you're her widower—in all but name."
"That's right."
Burley unhooks his finger and leans back. He is smiling again.
And finally the direction of this meeting declares itself to Wheeler. What Burley is performing, asking him to assist in, too late but nonetheless necessarily, is a kind of wedding between himself and Kate Helen Branch.
