The first step of #ancientwoodlandrestoration is to halt further decline by removing the threats to the health and natural diversity of the #Woodlands, supporting it's #NaturalRegeneration. Learn more about these amazing #forests and how to restore them in our latest film youtu.be/AWgtMwWCCBA?...

Trees have an extra climate benefit thanks to methane-eating microbes
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is converted to CO2 by microbes in tree bark, meaning trees are even better for the climate than we thought

Some of my most formative moments were spent wandering ancient oak forests along river valleys, curled up under special trees and discovering all of the life beneath their canopies. These woodlands are my home and my inspiration. #AncientWoodland #NatureConnection #Woodland #Adventure

Great work and I don’t think we are talking at cross purposes. I’m interested in the why and how to change things too. I’d hope the films that I make go some way to promoting woodland creation and helping open up understanding and discussions across the different types of woodland creation.

System change requires systems to change, and often new grants are put in the hands of people that don’t understand them. No matter that people higher up believe and support them and have created them. Usually it requires an intervention and a change in processes, and sometimes staff.

I’d be surprised if they aren’t looking at ways to change that and not make it too complicated to administer. Most treeplanting is done for biodiversity (in England) so it would make sense.

Yes, that might be some of what is actually happening. It’s still very new and one hand isn’t talking to the other. People making decisions about something they don’t understand. That is one of the challenge that Ed Green who took 4/5 years to get his application through had, but not the only one.

I have spoken with the FC and sat in conferences where they were asked these questions. It’s good to see the work they are doing mapping areas where any woodland creation will be fast tracked because of low conflicting land use and taking on more people to process applications -the main bottleneck.

Nat Regen works in some places not in others as deer density is much higher now. Hence the need for tree guards and deer fencing. People are waiting to see others try. See Ed Green at 14.08 here who spent years getting his grant for a mix of regen and planting: youtu.be/Qxpwxda-6K8?...

Yes, that was mentioned by a couple of people as something that needed to change when I made this film. youtu.be/Qxpwxda-6K8?... You can see at around 13.05 how they’ve dealt with this in the planting design behind Ali at Broughton Hall.

But they do allow for natural regeneration and it’s a 4y/o grant so teething trouble and cautiousness. We should be looking for case studies of people who have taken up the grant, to encourage more landowners to do the same, rather than saying the govt is failing to do something. It’s really not.

pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social @pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social · 29/04/2025
A grant to support natural regeneration isn’t failing to support natural regeneration. It’s been going for 4 years. It takes time for the pioneering people to try something and then their more cautions neighbours to follow suit if the process including application goes smoothly.

pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social @pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social · 29/04/2025
Are there lots of land managers wanting natural regeneration in areas more than 75m from a tree? Are the land managers (and the FC) not just waiting to see results from those that have taken up this, very new, 4y/o grant which was notoriously hard to apply for because it was over subscribed?

It’s a fairly new grant that has been difficult to get through as overall the application to EwCO was larger than the FC capacity to deal with. That’s changed now. But Nat regen funded positive success stories need to be shared for other landowners to try it. Also: youtu.be/V7WqkS1Ea-c?...

It often needs fencing. Pretty sure the grant pays for this. Browsing levels will be one of the main drivers for success.

pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social @pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
I agree. We should be celebrating that natural regeneration was added to the EWCO grant and encourage uptake rather than be critical that a new grant hasn’t had so much uptake. Let’s find case studies of people doing it and share them.

pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social @pocketfullofacorns.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
It’s really not. Especially in England. By far the majority of tree planting is amenity/biodiversity planting. And has been for a while. We are loosing productive forestry despite being 2nd largest importer of timber.

It’s a fairly new addition to the tree planting grant. As it’s new, farmers and landowners will be looking to see success stories. It would be great to see the results of landowners who have gone down this route for some of their planting. It could encourage others to follow.

The gorse will be protecting the regenerating woodland in these landscapes. Only way to get woodland without the thorns protecting them is planting trees with tree guards. Just visited a trial site using thorns instead of tree guards. But definitely wetter the better to protect against fire.
