The Ron Paul fans rapidly discovered the limits of their entryism and mostly became disillusioned. Turning up to caucuses and fixing the platform didn't actually result in elected officials implementing their policies nor in it making it easier to remove those officials.

You can't expel people for not supporting the platform; you can't prevent a candidate you don't like from spending money (in many countries, party officials have to sign off on fundraising and spending, so they can cut people off at the knees).

But taking control of state chairs and platforms is just much less significant in the US - in either party - than the equivalents in real political parties. You can't get yourself onto a selection committee and then deselect an elected official so they can't use the party's ballot line.

Classically, entryism is where a relatively small cadre join the party and manipulate the party's governance structures to take control of them. I think the closest anyone ever came to that in the US was Ron Paul in the GOP.

Technically I don’t think you can do “entryism” to the Democratic Party because in the American system the parties can’t actually hold candidates to a line. They don’t even have “members” so they can’t be “entered”

The youngest living British person to have been born before WWII (ie to have lived through the war) notable enough to have a Wikipedia page is Sir Trevor McDonald.

Specifically, Posy Simmonds (the youngest living Brit to have been born before VJ day and to have a Wikipedia page). The more fun one is that the youngest Brit with a Wikipedia page born before the declaration of war is Sir Trevor MacDonald. I suspect he isn't pained by mass immigration.

But you are aware of such a person. This entire thread is about making people aware that a Labour MP believes that some people (specifically trans people) should not go to hospital in a medical emergency because they might upset cis people.

the decision has been made to revert “the arts” as a category of human activity to the sole province of second sons and daughters of wealth. no funding for arts degrees at state schools. it’s a toy for rich people again. pricing the poors out of human expression is a feature and not a bug.

Not frivolous, but I could spend truly astonishing amounts of money. Bankroll Ukraine so they can win the war. Build rail infrastructure worldwide. Develop and mass produce zero-carbon jet fuel. Bridge the Gibraltar strait.

So here's a thing re. The NHS trans healthcare thing, loudly for the people at the back : TRANS PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO SUFFER WORSE HEALTHCARE OUTCOMES BECAUSE SOME BIGOTED CUNTS ARE MADE UNCOMFORTABLE BY THEIR EXISTENCE. That is all. You can go about your business. Move along.

It was intended for things like "we're not discriminating against you for not having a religion, we're discriminating against you for being a humanist and that's not a religion, but it's also not merely the absence of religion, so we can fire you for being in the BHA".

Veganism wasn't even the sort of thing it was intended for either. The section is "religion or belief". Was pretty clear that belief was for atheists and also so courts don't have to rule on which religion-like things are real religions.

I dunno, if the US Government arrests and imprisons Elon Musk and seizes his property, and then they start making half-decent cars, then ... maybe? The first bits (arrest, imprisonment, seizure) sound like pretty good ideas anyway.

The US should have a federal agency that is expert in arresting people and executing warrants without escalating, using excessive force, etc. They should be the only federal agency with formal police powers, and all the other feds should have to use them.

Richard Gadsden @po8crg.gadsden.online · 16/10/2026
I think that a replacement for ICE shouldn't have powers of arrest at all. They should do their investigations and then have to contact local police or the FBI and get them to do the actual arrests. There are far too many federal agencies with the power of arrest.

No-one else was talking about A&E, you came in and said "A&E is different" and we just said yeah, this isn't about A&E, it's about an emergency ward which is a different thing.

ATF has chosen not to appeal a District Court case and has just amended the national guidelines as if this was the Supreme Court. That does mean that a future Democratic trifecta can increase the tax in reconciliation back to $200 (or higher) and reintroduce the regulation.

Richard Gadsden @po8crg.gadsden.online · 16/10/2026
I was going to continue this... Gun Owners of America (a group of people who quit the NRA for not being pro-gun enough) won a court case in Texas saying that if the tax is $0, then the regulations around the tax are unconstitutional.

"concerned about" can mean either "I was worried about what this person might do" and "I was worried about what might be done to this person". autoantonyms, aren't they helpful.

Because prepositions are a complete mess in the English language, my first read of this was that she'd stayed to protect the trans person from her dangerously transphobic mother.

In some hospitals, there's an emergency ward where A&E patients are admitted to until they can be allocated a space in a general ward.

OBBA lowered the tax stamp to $0 so you can't actually pay it, which is why this is messy.

The NHS is already one of the biggest perpetrators of anti-trans violence in the UK. This new guidance, which refers to trans people using slurs, demands that we be segregated and abused. I’ve said it before: senior NHS managers must be sacked and punished for what they’ve done to us.

The substantive articles are what makes the NYT credible so we turn to it for a quick cross-check to make sure we haven't missed someone out. I don't trust Google's search page or AI summary not to leave someone out because Pichai wants them to lose. But I only read the substantive article once.

I think it's even worse. They think we're not real. That's why any mass demonstration has to be manipulated, because there aren't that many people genuinely angry, so it must be outside agitators.

I find it fascinating how much both of you two write about adjacent topics and yet very rarely actually overlap. In some ways it's more convincing of just how *big* history is, that two wide-ranging careers almost never take on the same topic.

The email I just sent the @societyofauthors.bsky.social .
This is nonsense, plain and simple. You can *either* be "clear that there can never be any truly ethical use of generative AI" *or* "ensure that it is used in a responsible way, to minimise the harmful impacts on humans and the environment."
One or the other. You have to pick a side, and by signing up to this charter the SoA has picked the side of technofascism.
The only acceptable response at this point is a full apology, the resignation of everyone involved in this decision, withdrawal from this charter, and a simple statement that the SoA is implacably opposed to all uses of GenAI in the publishing industry.
Anything else and you have sold out those you claim to represent.
