we stepped out of the evening sun into the cold rooms and mildew of the old hotel. trying the spirit box in several rooms yielded no clues, until we reached the conservatory. amidst shards of broken glass it finally spoke:

like rapt fools with shivering spines and cold sweat we listened. i racked my brain for the meaning, just out of reach. why was i so unsettled?
it spoke again:

dreadful memory flooded my mind and i searched for a hammer to smash the box. as i swung for it in slow motion, i heard:
* jiāngshī *
the spirit box exploded in a shower of sparks and shards. out hopped a dismal creature, all rotten white face and red fangs. its rotted robe billowed in the still room and its clawed hands were stretched out stiffly towards us. it had no eyes, and turned to look at each of us in turn
"run!" i screamed
and we did! we ran for our lives. niles fled upstairs, maz for the front door and i ran further into the hotel, slamming doors behind me
over my aching breath i heard thumps, as of something heavy hopping up the stairs. thumps moving across the floor above me, a crash and the most awful scream i have ever had the misfortune to hear. a scream full of anguish and despair, turning into raw agony until it cut off
i had reached the kitchen's cold room, which had a solid metal door. i closed it quietly after me, and stood there, backed against the far wall. silent
perhaps it hadn't heard me. i would wait an hour, then sneak out the back. breathing as quietly as i could, i listened
was that a distant thump coming down the stairs?

surely my imagination
thump .. thump .. THUMP ..
a banging against the metal door. it would hold. it had to!
the banging was riotously loud now, as if .. it .. was taking a run up and charging. or leaping at the door. the metal began to buckle inwards
i looked around desperately for a shield, a weapon, an escape. there were just empty, rusted metal shelves. i grabbed one and held it in front of me
as the door crashed in, i saw the thing. jiāngshī. its pustulent white face and flowing dress were covered in blood. niles's blood
its rigid arms stretched towards me and the smell was appalling. it smiled crookedly, and hopped towards me. brandishing the shelf, i abjured it with "fuck off!"
off it did not fuck. instead, it drew itself down like on some great spring, and leaped at me. in an instant i was thrown back against the wall with a loud crack. numbed, one arm broken and the shelf was crushed
my last thought as it leaps again is this:
i hope maz runs fast
