People were incredibly supportive of the strikes yesterday, you’d almost think the “we all partied” messaging which helped stifle mass discontent when austerity measures were being inflicted from 2008-14 wasn’t going to wash after years of budget surpluses during a major squeeze on living standards.

Irish-Palestinian solidarity was built over several decades by the hard work of pro-Palestine advocates, many of whom toiled in obscurity. Delighted to have had this published in @ancloganmag.bsky.social to draw attention to their efforts from 1967 onwards. www.anclogan.ie/from-belfast...

Ending a 18 month detox from social media to join cogar.ie ar son na cúise if any Gaels want to join me. I’d like to say it was a golden age of productivity and creativity but I was mostly watching TV and playing videogames instead. It’s me, I’m the problem.

Stop generalising about autistic people based on Elon Musk. We didn't all grow up in apartheid-era South Africa with parents who owned a diamond mine.

Seeing people claim Elon Musk threw the Nazi salute up because he "has Aspberger's" and now I miss the days when people thought all autistic people were basically Rain Man.

Gonna be in Sevilla in a few weeks - any recs for cool restaurants/bars/shops/cafés etc beyond the obvious? I have some mobility issues so preferably easily accessible by public transport. Been there before but didn't make it too far out of touristland.

Society is currently halfway through a reckoning on how destructive the impact of social media on society has been, and there's every chance future generations will view allowing its barely regulated use in the 2010s as comparable to letting cigarettes and drink be freely sold to kids for decades.

How did we get to this puritanical moment where there're entire newspaper articles describing David Lynch being a lifelong chain smoker as an act of selfishness by depriving us of further films? Even superstar athletes were chain smokers in the 70s, never mind film directors.

This conflation of anti-semitism and anti-Zionism has led to pro-Palestine groups being forced out of universities in Britain, to say nothing of the fact nearly 40% of people charged under it in Germany were actually Jewish. "The most pro-Palestine country in Europe"?

The Nakba is a process, not an event. Palestine was the issue long before October 7th, and the ceasefire should be the beginning, not the end, of pressing for sanctions on apartheid Israel.

The genocide didn't begin because of October 7th. The erasure of Palestine has been going on since 1917 and is going to continue long after this unless Western leaders and corporations are brought to task for their unconditional support for Zionism.

Many people go back to learn Irish after deciding they want to be able to speak it to their children, and thrive doing so. Why focus on an American polyglot instead of acknowledging that the real issue is that many people aren't exposed to the language outside the classroom as kids?

You lot are very judgemental about Amanda Palmer. It's hardly fair to accuse someone who manipulated her fandom of lonely teenagers into doing work she was too cheap to hire a manager for of knowingly placing someone in the path of a sex pest instead of hiring a nanny.

Pádraig Mac Oscair 🇵🇸 🇱🇧 @pmacoscair.bsky.social · 14/01/2025
Easy and fun to say that you never liked Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer, but their work did mean a lot to some people who felt out of place growing up in the 00s much as Whedon's did. These revelations just make their memories of adolescence even worse.

Can we bury the myth Irish neutrality is "free-riding"? Irish neutrality is hugely important to ensuring the safety of civilians in some of the world's worst warzones - Irish peackeepers have been by far the biggest contingent on UN missions in Lebanon with death tolls to match.

Some schools place their GAA players on such a pedestal that they actually wear a different uniform to the rest of their classmates, it's hardly a surprise some grown adults are coming to Rory Gallagher's defence when they've been conditioned to grant him such a high place in the social hierarchy.

My ex-girlfriend worked in content moderation for Facebook in 2017 - it was always treated as an afterthought. It was mostly outsourced to CPL on a series of short-term contracts, with a high turnover of moderators owing to long hours for poor pay. Ultimately our only protection is logging off.

There's been a hugely proactive pro-Palestine activist movement in Ireland since the late 1960s which has done a huge amount to boost awareness and promote BDS campaigns across Irish society, particularly in the 21st century. Solidarity is built from the bottom-up.
