over 3 years, I had like 100 design proposals I did for all sorts of products, each time I was told "no, we can't do this". Many of the proposals weren't even commented on. At times my job felt like it didn't matter if I did it or not. In the end, J was only gonna care about enamel pins anyway

For example, Electric-type Fakemon are typically drawn as energetic, saturated color, w/ sharp lines, but that gets really repetitive fast. A more interesting take of an Electric type might be a creature that was the OPPOSITE idea-- one that was sleepy, low-energy, soft shapes & lines, muted colors

An electric character being yellow & having sharp shape geometry is extremely uninteresting to me. Been there, done that. I really feel like the Pokemon Yamper would NEVER be made by a fakemon artist, simply because it subverts traditional Electric type imagery (being soft, round & muted)

The problem w/ Fakemon is that the vast majority of the artists don't have this deeper level. They just don't look at it from that angle. No, my problem w/ Fakemon is that basically most of the fan-made designs are just very shallow Elemental Creatures, & that gets fucking generic & boring FAST

Modern Pokemon designs often say something interesting w/ shape, w/ subverted expectations, w/ the particular weirdness that you can't quite predict. Pokemon designs nowadays often tell visual stories or reflect the region's personal aesthetics and vibe.

the magic of Pokemon character design (on its surface) may appear to be "Animal + Elemental theme". While that IS part of their design ethos, for most Fakemon artists, that's literally all they do. This is a problem because for Game Freak, their creative process is actually more nuance than that
