🧠 How the brain encodes pain: Between people: unstable. Within people: robust. That is the central finding of our new paper in PLOS Biology. A strong case for more longitudinal and personalized approaches to pain biomarkers. dx.plos.org/10.1371/jour...

Neural encoding of pain is robust within but unstable between individuals
Pain varies both within and between individuals, even when sensory input remains constant. This study shows that brain signals robustly track intra-individual pain fluctuations, but are less sensitive...

🧠 Rethinking EEG biomarkers. Lack of disease specificity may not be a weakness of brain biomarkers-it may be exactly what makes them clinically useful. A transdiagnostic, dimensional perspective could help bridge neuroscience and clinical practice. rdcu.be/fpUpQ

🧠 The future of pain biomarkers may not lie in proving pain. A thoughtful debate in Nature Neuroscience highlights the need for personalized, multimodal, and clinically useful biomarkers that complement—rather than replace—patients' reports. rdcu.be/fniXL rdcu.be/fni5J

How can we embrace the complexity of chronic pain and its brain basis? New preprint links data-driven symptom dimensions (affective vs physical burden) to resting-state EEG connectivity, moving beyond pain intensity alone. doi.org/10.64898/202...

How does the brain encode pain variability? New preprint: EEG markers of pain are robust within individuals over time, but unstable between individuals—even with replication. Suggests EEG is better for longitudinal pain tracking. doi.org/10.64898/202...

New paper in EBioMedicine! We analyzed EEG from 614 people with chronic pain across 5 countries. Standard EEG biomarkers didn’t replicate, but network connectivity (esp. theta) shows promise. Open access: tinyurl.com/yc599257

Can brain activity predict pain sensitivity? Our new study tested whether peak alpha frequency (PAF) predicts brief experimental pain in 159 participants. Using preregistered multiverse analyses, we found no consistent evidence for this link. journals.lww.com/pain/fulltex...
