Our kids' grade school would do a regular "Parents Night Out" where admins + staff would stay late with group of 8th graders for parents who wanted to drop off their kids so they could go out. Charged $25/kid for 5 hrs as a fundraiser. Was wildly popular - sitters are impossible to find in the city

This take is pure smarm, it's actually because you didn't have social media apps putting every crime that occurs in the city into your brainhole, often multiple times depending upon the algorithm. So even though crime was higher back then it didn't "feel" that way for many folks living in the city.

Know this was intended as a joke but the Sox and Cardinals winning in back-to-back seasons in '05-'06 even snapped the *abysmal* TribCo ownership out of their stupor and made them get serious (hiring Piniella, signing Soriano, etc), leading to two straight division titles in 2007-08.
