That used to be their main medium, used to get a pile of them from my local library before going on long trips.

I hope this starts a trend. We need this energy.

Most of it is simply because so many places have so many laws that it would be a full-time job to keep up with it all, and implementing a proper verification mechanism costs money per-user (i.e a site with 1000 users could cost them $5000). So better for them to just get rid of the problem.

I have found a lot of smaller sites are just being extra precautious. Even here in Australia, the age verification laws actually are set up so that sites like SpaceHey don't really have to do much, what is really happening is site admins are being extra cautious to a fault.

Ultimately keeping in touch with people and using word-of-mouth is the most solid way to find stuff.

The real core of it is infrastructure. Keep your friends XMPP and email addresses and talk regularly, and subscribe to RSS feeds for blogs you follow.

Welcome to the indie web. This is just how it is. Even back in the "old days" sites would go up and down much faster than people are used to now, there is not gonna be a single set of sites that just stays static.

Personally I only ever view direct posts and quote-posts here, anything else is just a vector for outrage-bait to enter my eyeballs.

It definitely is a trying time to have a nuanced opinion online over the last 6 years. I really feel like it is just good to take a step back, curate your spaces a little and maybe just turn off algorithmic stuff entirely. This stuff is just corrosive to ones mental health.

I think it is a case where someone in marketing made a fuckup, but people are treating it like the entire project is metaphysically trained or some shit. I increasingly find it hard to take any anti-ai drama seriously, even as someone who very much dislikes gen-ai in creative work.

People need to come to terms with the fact that even if they agree that something is harmful, clickbait/ragebait content farms are still gonna try and exploit your anxiety. Just because you agree with something on principle, it doesn't mean you are immune to subversion and manipulation via it.

Like everything in the real world, it is because things are more complicated than they first appear. Internet discourse loves to shove things into a binary perspective, but even something as controversial as AI has its nuances.

Chances are is was just a really, REALLY shitty mixing job. Not every bad thing is AI, sometimes it is just a person not doing a good job 😆

Minecraft is an interesting case in that it got viral super fast circa 2010-11, and Fortnite is an Epic Games project that was already tied to a major studio. Vintage Story is a good one to point out though :) Another good example is StarSector.

I agree, and that is where the big difference lies between PC and (modern) consoles. You have a choice in where you can distribute as a developer. That being said while Valve is not inherently anti-competitive, it does have sufficient critical mass to necessitate smaller developers to sell there.

That is what "tech nerd" means these days sadly. The trust-fund silicone valley guy who is really into effective altruism, not the guy soldering stuff to overclock his motherboard in his basement.

I agree, it is always a give and take. Many kids will have lifelong interests in stuff they found though Fortnite, and I think that is cool.

I really feel we need a return to the healthy distance between the artist and the audience. Social media engagement is just not sustainable long-term. Toby Fox is a good example of how to do it.
