Work must be right - and that means extreme care needs to be taken to make sure we are not wrong. If we are right, then we should be interesting! Otherwise what's the point? If we're doing something right and interesting, then there is space to be creative. Is the method novel? Is it fun?

My linocut portrait of Félicette, a Parisian stray tuxedo cat who was recruited into the French space program. It's printed by hand, in black ink on pearlescent Japanese paper, 6" x 8". She peers from the side of the image, facing the viewer with the electrode on her head, the Véronique rocket, paw print, her name and starry sky behind her.

It's a good example of the famed lack of taste that is typical of these systems right now. Having a killer closing line can obviously work. Having thirty, not so much. It's like writing a story and having a climax every fifth scene.

Inspector Smile is ready for science! 🫡 This is Smile’s first ultraviolet view showing an auroral substorm. With the ultraviolet camera now operational, Smile becomes the first spacecraft since 2008 to capture the full ring of northern lights around the north pole in ultraviolet light. 🔭 🧪 ☀️

Ah, looks like that has changed, or at least made more clear, Thanks. I've been on the other side a few times and I know of at least one case where the paper was rejected, because the results were already discussed in the media. There mostly was a kind of paranoid atmosphere around it.

Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Yes, I assume there will be a proper press release once this paper gets published.

Thanks! And the media you write for doesn't mind that it's not peer-reviewed yet?

And I was also wondering about how much papers care about it being peer reviewed.

Yeah I guess it's less in the socialising aspect? I don't know. Our kids are not bad with that fortunately. Something I found quickly (have to cook!) www.rug.nl/education/st... I'm very curious what you find out and good luck with everything!

I guess I've seen quite some examples where autism, adhd, and giftedness were looked at in isolation and that didn't always work out well, imo. I think it would be ideal to always consider the whole neurodivergence package.

Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And that helped you?

Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Can I ask why? You found a better fitting environment?
100
Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
My point is that "the things you simply cannot do" can also be caused by the giftedness itself (e.g. bad executive functions). Giftedness can also have severely disabling aspects, unfortunately. It's more that just fast and creative brains, which seems a common misconception among the public.
100
Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The 'diagnosis' giftedness has already allowed a lot of professional help and special arrangements at school fortunately. That makes a potential extra diagnosis a bit less urgent, fortunately.
000
Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
They're also textbook parts of giftedness, that makes it hard imo. A large part of gifted kids perform very poorly at school, because of things like sensitivity, lack of executive functions, etc. We know quite some kids that cannot even go to school. Not necessarily autistic, though some are.
100
Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Yeah, we know quite a few kids that fit the bill, quite some diagnosed as well.

Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
She's 12 by the way.
000
Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Hence I'm always a bit wary in only looking for an autistism diagnosis for people who are likely gifted as well. In my academic (and bluesky ;) ) bubble, that's a large fraction.
100
Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Because our girls went to a class for gifted children, we know a lot of parents with gifted and/or autistic kids. But also instances where there was first the autism diagnosis and the giftedness was ignored, causing great unhappiness in the kid because their needs are somewhat different...

Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
A bit weird that it isn't an "official" thing, because the problems are similar. It would help in understanding from the outside world, imo. You get a different response if you say you have a gifted kid compared to saying you have an autistic child, although the parenting struggles can be as hard.
300
Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Yeah, we've been reading a lot in the past, and had help. More about the extreme giftedness, but we also learned about the overlap with autism and adhd.

Remco de Kok @planetremco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Sounds a bit like my youngest daughter (maybe less extreme for her?). We are still doubting whether we should look more into that side of her or whether it is part of her giftedness, which is similar. Sounds like you would have wanted to know at the time?
