Modern people have the added factor of non-refundable trips! Checkout was 10 am and huts were rented for Tues-Thurs., so probably felt pressure to leave. It was a whiteout by 3 pm on Monday near there, so not a great decision to proceed.

The huts book out sun-tues, tues-thurs, thurs-sat and are sold out for the season. Check-out was 10 am and the stays are non-refundable. That said, trip should have been cancelled.

Review the Truckee Tahoe Land Trust site that clearly describes paths in and out and the extensive area related avalanche info. Also, you can see the huts are booked out, with the next reservation starting Tuesday. Their checkout time would have been 10 am. They shouldn’t have gone though.
