Drone strikes knocked AWS data centers in Bahrain and the UAE offline. Data that lived only in the destroyed zone is gone. Most customers recovered by restoring backups kept elsewhere (AWS's words). A region is not a backup. Keep an independent, offsite copy. plakar.link/offsite

This summer, a hacker deleted Romania's entire land registry database after a failed extortion attempt, paralyzing the real-estate market. Luckily they had an offline copy... It's unclear how long it took them to restore though. Friendly reminder that backups are not a nice to have!

Proxmox backs up your VMs with vzdump, but those dumps sit on local storage, unencrypted and un-deduplicated. The Proxmox integration wraps vzdump and stores each backup as a Plakar snapshot: dedup, encryption, portable anywhere. plakar.link/proxmox
