To make this news somehow worse, I just received an email from the UoE today about how 'The University's spend on generative AI has increased significantly over the last six months...' 🤦‍♂️

So sad about this. It was a brilliant programme that provided a foundation for many who went on to PhDs & made significant scholarly contributions (pres company obvs. included). As far as I know, in the central belt there's now no programme focused on study of the primary texts, a considerable loss.

If this headline is true, I'm nearing immortality.
News headline: "Every hotdog eaten shortens life by 36 minutes..." but "nuts add 26 minutes and salmon 16 minutes"

"An exceptionally well-written and clear thesis…" — the first review of Maria – Mutter im Konflikt (@mohrsiebeck.bsky.social) is out in JSNT, and I still can't believe the brilliant Helen Bond wrote it. Full review in the picture below.
[Shortened — full text in image]
Eva Puschautz, Maria Mutter im Konflikt: Eine feministisch-historisch-kritische Lektüre von Mk 3,20f.31-35. WUNT II 648. Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2025.
In this slightly expanded and revised version of her Vienna doctoral thesis, Eva Puschautz argues that early Christian sources contain very little material relating to the 'historical Mary'. One passage that repays further investigation, however, is the curious account in Mk 3.30-21, 31-35 of the attempt by Jesus' mother and siblings to take him home… Adopting a feminist-historical perspective, she reconstructs an entirely plausible situation in which the widowed Mary finds herself in tension with her son, whom she sees as not only failing in his filial obligations but as potentially threatening the family's honour… Assuming the role of mater familias, she sets out with the family to bring Jesus back to Nazareth. In this, she aligns herself with other women in Mark's gospel… who similarly take matters into their own hands.
…Puschautz turns her attention to the generally more idealized characterization of Mary in a range of early Christian texts… It is in the pastoral epistles, however, that she finds the key to Mary's transformation… these letters promulgate a patriarchal worldview that curtailed women's authority and encouraged them instead to accept a subordinate, domestic, and maternal role… the figure of Mary could be moulded to make obedience and motherhood attractive to women…
This is an exceptionally well-written and clear thesis that manages both to reconstruct a plausible context for the historical Mary and also to account for the rise of the idealized and symbolic Marys of the church. The resulting woman is no longer flawless, but her family tensions, conflicts and contradictions create a woman we can all more easily relate to.

It's late August and almost the start of the academic year. I haven't been a graduate student for over 15 years, but every year at this this time I remember the excitement and anxiety that I experienced entering into my PhD program. So a thread for those doing so now. 1/6

My daughter & I went to the Mamores to hike the 'Ring of Steall' for the Glasgow Fair Monday holiday. Brilliant & exhausting day in the mountains: a 19k circuit, four Munros, & 1700m of ascent; unusually warm on the summits. The teenager had better nerves than me on the ridges & scrambles.

I raced this route nine years ago in the 'Ring of Steall Skyrace,' which included an extra 10k distance +1000m of climbing from the start in Kinlochleven. I'm exhausted today and honestly don't know how I managed to run the route before.

Sad to read this news. I remember receiving Persepolis 1 & 2 as a gift from an Iranian refugee friend around 2006, which he described as one of the most accurate descriptions of his experience. In the midst of the horrors Satrapi articulated, her art was so humanising. What a loss.

Acts of Andrew & Matthias. For students, it's a wild, weird, & entertaining story. Some interesting discussions to be had about the details that determine its Sitz im Leben. It can also be used as an example of popular Christology, or the ways in which Jewish tradition was both co-opted & rejected.

In the sixth and final lecture, Prof Fredriksen traced how a marginal Jewish sect transformed into an imperial state religion; she charted this development across centuries, but memorably summarised it in her statement: ‘𝐎𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧, 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧.’ #Giffords2026
