Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 5hActually you're required to use the media-standard unit of volume, the Olympic-size swimming pool. 130
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 6hThat's a new one on me but completely believable! For a while I figured surely they'd put out some updates to improve it but it's been like this for years. 000
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 6hIt's so bizarre how bad the Paramount+ app is. Aside from its horrific performance issues, its UX is completely broken. All they had to do was copy the conventions that every other app has adopted but no. 100

Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 7hIf they were citizens of a Palestinian state they would be, but of course they aren't. Some of them used to have Palestinian citizenship before the Zionists unilaterally seceded from Palestine in 1948. 010
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 7hI'm saying the motion calls for self-determination of Palestinians, period. To assume that this is voicing support for a discriminatory Palestinian state is a bad faith reading of it. Why would the party criticize other ethnostates but welcome a Palestinian one? 000
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 8hAnd yes, some people feel that it's important to stand firmly against things like imperialism, genocide and apartheid. If that alienates others from the party then maybe they should take a look inside. 000
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 8hThat group of people (certainly not "my own") misrepresented the motion, as I said. The motion objects to the exclusionary and discriminatory form of Zionism that is practiced by the state of Israel, not any other forms of Zionism. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 8hBut it's only incoherent if that self-determination takes the form of a discriminatory ethnostate, which is not what the motion calls for. A Palestinian state that grants citizenship without favor and treats all citizens equally would not be the same as the statist Zionism being objected to. 000
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 8hThe point is that the motion doesn't posit their self-determination as an ethnic group, which would indeed be inconsistent. And if they were to form an ethnostate it would be as objectionable as any other. 110
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 16hThat Israel institutionally discriminates against Palestinians, inside and certainly outside the Green Line, contra your claim. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 17h? But if you actually believe what you say then I'm sure you can put the lie to the assertions made in this section: www.hrw.org/report/2021/... 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 17hOk so it's not about these mystical nations then, just a question of whether you can get enough other countries to recognize yours. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 17hSo you just wave your hands at everything documented in that report, and it all goes away? 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 17hYeah, no. So many asterisks.hrw.orgA Threshold CrossedThe 213-page report, “A Threshold Crossed: Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution,” examines Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. It presents the present-day reality of a singl... 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 17hSo if I get 20 people together we can be a nation, and then we can carve a piece out of some country for our very own ethnostate? Seems bad. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 17hNo I didn't, I have no such knowledge. It's something you made up. 000
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 18hYes, and some discriminate between different classes of citizens, like Israel. 100

Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 22hAside from everything else, I can't imagine there's any chance of Jordan going along with this. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 23hAnd let's be real here: the form of Zionism described in the motion isn't "the most extreme right-wing version of Zionism", it's the one that's been practiced in Israel since its founding. One that privileges one group and excludes others. One that has led to the constant colonization of Palestine. 010
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 23hLol everything is about the USSR or Russia, no other countries have agency. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 23hOf course many Palestinians do consider themselves part of a distinct ethnic identity, or many identities (religious, national, pan-national). If they were to create a state based on ethnic identity that discriminated against others it would be wrong. No one is giving them a pass on discrimination! 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 23hFirst off, in the US only a small percentage of Jews consider themselves Zionists (23% in a recent poll). I can't imagine it's radically different in the UK. But in any case, that's exactly why the motion carefully describes what it means by Zionism, which is not "all forms of Zionism". 210
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 23hPalestinians are people who live or lived in Palestine, just as the French are people who live in France. Do you really want to align yourself with the people who would consider a citizen of France to not be French because of their ethnic background? 130
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I must have missed when all the Jewish Greens came out against the motion. I would have certainly supported it, and I'm guessing many other anti-Zionist Jews did. 200
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Where do they say that Palestinians are an ethnic group that should have an ethnostate? 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026As defined in the motion, it is the form of Zionism that is exclusionary and discriminatory, which is what actually exists in Israel independent of any particular government and its policies. It's codified in their Basic Laws (effectively their constitution), and has existed since its formation. 110
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Right, and the Green Party has taken a stance against the Myanmar government and its persecution of the Rohingya. That was my point, they haven't singled out Israel, just added them to the list with Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc. 200
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Some people would say my children aren't Jewish because their mother isn't. Israel would say they are, but only for citizenship purposes. Both "peoples" and nations are arbitrary fictions, lines drawn around a group of people or on a map. As always the question is by whom? 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Should we allow every group of people to define who belongs to their group, as Israel has, and then grant them their own country? If not, who gets to decide which groups have countries? Who gets to decide who belongs to which groups? How many different groups can one person belong to? Etc. etc. etc. 200
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026It's not associating it with fascism, but with the idea that you can define a "people" that have some inherent association with a piece of land. But there are no such thing as "peoples", there are just identities that we assume and/or are thrust upon us by others. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I agree that "racism" doesn't precisely capture all the different forms of discrimination, but I think it suffices in this case. 000
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Right, because there's general agreement about other ethnostates being discriminatory, isn't there? Is anyone standing up for the racists in Myanmar or Sri Lanka? And they aren't even as institutionally discriminatory as Israel. 200
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026But that's the exact point, it isn't about the current Israeli government. It's about statist Zionism itself, which is inherently discriminatory, as are all ethnonationalist movements. 120
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Yes, and Wilson was a racist, and there is no such thing as "a people", and even if there was should all the thousands of "peoples" of the world have their own nations? It's an absurd concept on its face. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026You're assuming that "self-determination" is inherently ethnonationalist. But if you get away from that 19th-century blood-and-soil concept, as we all should, then it can simply mean the ability of a group of people to govern themselves, as opposed say to living under occupation. 100
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Yes, and any state that grants differential privileges based on ethnicity is wrong and should be condemned, as Israel rightly is. It's really a pretty simple standard to maintain! 010
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026OK how about the Hadza, what country is their ancestral homeland? Tanzania? Tanganyika? German East Africa? It's all just lines on maps that people who have power draw and fight over. It's completely meaningless. 000
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026And their definition of who is Jewish, and therefore gains the accompanying privileges, has changed over time. Because it is arbitrary, as are all such definitions. 010
Peter Jeffe @pjeffe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026No, it's just reality. How can you say that e.g. the Yoruba are associated with a given country, since there were no countries prior to European imperialism, and the current borders split them into multiple countries? There is no actual association of ethnicities with states, nor should there be. 100
