In the first weeks of the war, there were practically no rules of engagement. The word "civilians" was never uttered. The rule was: Shoot anyone you see. At least within your own sector. This only changed after soldiers shot three Israeli hostages in December 2023, even though they were carrying a white flag. But even the new rules were more like suggestions. Our company commander said we should try not to shoot women, children, or people with a white flag. One thing remained constant throughout the war: Every man of military age was classified as a terrorist, with "military age" being interpreted very loosely. It could mean anywhere from 16 to 60, but also younger or older.

Well here's some insight
Tweet at 12:37 PM on Oct 10, 2026 by Gad Saad (@GadSaad):

A few years ago, the cool identity was blackness. We also had the indigenous craze. Then we had queerness and trans. Then the only pathway to orgasmic revolution was to be a Muslim. Zionism has created and seeks to maintain – and where possible – expand, an
apartheid regime between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, designed to
cement the supremacy of one group, Jews, over another, Palestinians. As such,
Zionism is racist.

This motion is aimed at the political ideology and practice of Zionism, as
defined, and not at the religious or ethnic background of those who may identify
as Zionists. Not all Jews are Zionists and not all Zionists are Jews.

Rejecting Zionism and supporting the liberation of the Palestinian people is not
discriminatory against Jewish people. Nor is it discriminatory to support the
establishment of a single democratic Palestinian State between the Jordan river
and the Mediterranean Sea with equal rights for all.

It's striking how the essence of capitalism that Marx captured has remained true through today. Its relentless drive to increase productivity both immiserates workers and holds the promise of its transcendence, and this is as true with AI today as it was with the power loom and spinning jenny.
Marx's Grundrisse, Notebook VII:

<The creation of a large quantity of disposable time apart from
necessary labour time for society generally and each of its mem-
bers (i.e. room for the development of the individuals' full pro-
ductive forces, hence those of society also), this creation of not-
labour time appears in the stage of capital, as of all earlier ones,
as not-labour time, free time, for a few. What capital adds is that
it increases the surplus labour time of the mass by all the means of
art and science, because its wealth consists directly in the appro-
priation of surplus labour time; since value directly its purpose,
not use value. It is thus, despite itself, instrumental in creating the
means of social disposable time, in order to reduce labour time
for the whole society to a diminishing minimum, and thus to
free everyone's time for their own development. But its tendency
always, on the one side, to create disposable time, on the other, to
convert it into surplus labour. If it succeeds too well at the first,
then it suffers from surplus production, and then necessary labour
is interrupted, because no surplus labour can be realized by capital.
The more this contradiction develops, the more does it become
evident that the growth of the forces of production can no longer
be bound up with the appropriation of alien labour, but that the
mass of workers must themselves appropriate their own surplus
labour. Once they have done so - and disposable time thereby
ceases to have an antithetical existence - then, on one side,
necessary labour time will be measured by the needs of the social
individual, and, on the other, the, development of the power of
social production will grow so rapidly that, even though produc-
tion is now calculated for the wealth of all, disposable time will
grow for all. For real wealth is the developed productive power
of all individuals. The measure of wealth is then not any longer,
in any way, labour time, but rather disposable time.

One of the new "Nonnegotiable" members was Mark Bernstein, a Jewish Democrat who serves on the University of Michigan's board of regents. Mr. Bernstein said he was a lifelong Democrat who was nonetheless considering voting for Mr. Rogers. He said Dr. El-Sayed's position on Israel had not evolved to his liking.

"Right now I think Jews face a grim choice in Michigan," Mr. Bernstein said. "We either compromise our commitment to democracy, or we compromise our commitment to Zionism."

I loved this gara cloth from Sierra Leone that I saw last week in the RISD Museum. Like cuneiform and human figures melded. Could lose myself in it for hours.
Photo of a partially unrolled textile mounted on a wall, composed of lines of dozens of abstract patterns. The patterns are dark slanted thick irregular lines and might suggest human figures, or maybe not. The description on the museum plaque reads:

"In the West African country of Sierra Leone, gara cloth is the name for cotton textiles typically resist-dyed by women in a variety of patterns, including undulating designs like the one on this length. Its blue color came from the leaves of the locally grown Yoruba indigo plant, and the light browns from crushed native kola nuts. The overall sheen was produced by repeatedly pounding the cloth.
A significant cultural symbol, gara is worn during important events or used for special household furnishings. This textile was given in 1968 by the community of Matotaka to John McWilliam in gratitude for his friendship and service as the village's first Peace Corps volunteer. McWilliam donated it to the RISD Museum in 2023."

Agreed, Salaita is very good at this. This essay of his is well worth reading. "We were told repeatedly that the very idea of Jewish peoplehood is contingent on Israel’s existence and were nevertheless given the responsibility of separating the two phenomena."
Unless one has been subject to it, then I don’t think it’s possible to imagine the relentlessness and intensity of Zionist efforts to eradicate any trace of Palestine in pop culture, politics, arts, and education. These efforts didn’t happen solely through phony accusations of antisemitism. They had an insidious social component, as well. The ability to tell stories or to flood programming with humanizing gestures made it easier to sell the idea of Israel as a spiritual counterpart to the United States. Arabs and Muslims had no such advantage. Our provenance needed to remain foreign for the relationship between Israel and the United States to make any sense. The notion that Jew-hatred is the only explanation for criticism of Israel would have gone nowhere without the cultural capital accumulated through disproportionate visibility. The sad irony of antisemitism is that in the past few decades it has harmed Palestinians more than anyone else.

The state of Texas may have forced Austin to remove its rainbow crosswalks, but it couldn't stop the installation of a prominent marker that "commemorates the historical significance and lasting contributions of Austin's LGBTQIA+ community". www.kut.org/austin/2026-...
Photo of a plaque titled "As Oueer As You Want To Be" mounted on a rainbow-painted brick wall:

This historical marker commemorates the contributions, struggles, and
successes of Austin's LGBTQIA+ community, whose historically denigrated
members spanned all genders, races, classes, abilities, creeds, generations,
and origins.

LGBTOIA+ individuals lost their jobs, social standing, and lives for not
conforming to societal norms. Outside of the isolation of private homes,
downtown bars and nightclubs offered secret, safe havens for LGBTQIA+
people to gather, recover, and be accepted amongst their peers.

Social justice movements in the 1960s advanced the struggles for justice,
acceptance, and equality. Civil rights efforts for women and communities of
color gave rise to a national gay and lesbian rights movement, and the Austin
community was quick to join. A local chapter of the Gay Liberation Front
was founded in 1970, with the first National Gay Liberation Conference
hosted here in 1971.

A vibrant culture emerged with the help of restaurants, bars, retail shops,
bookstores, theaters, churches, and a wide variety of professionals and
service providers. In the 1980s. a nightlife scene developed in this section of
downtown known as the "old warehouse' district, around 4th Street and
Colorado Street. Clubs with drag shows, entertainment, and dancing
provided social support by offering safe places to gather and build
community. Throughout the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, the clubs
offered occasions for sex education, counseling, fundraising - and solace. In
the 21st century, as the movement evolved to recognize all Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit, Genderfluid,
and other segments of the community, these blocks of bars and coffee shops
became integrated with the rest of downtown - much like the assimilation of
queer representation into mainstream culture.

(continued)Photo of the marker being dedicated by Mayor Watson and Garry Brown, a member of Austin's LGBTQ+ Quality of Life Advisory Commission, who drove the creation of the marker.

The plaque text concludes:

"From 2000 to 2020, financial pressures brought on by market forces in a
rapidly changing Austin challenged the business models that supported the
historical LGBTQIA+ businesses in the area. Some of these establishments
failed to survive when the COVID-19 pandemic hit hardest in 2020. Despite
these challenges and changes, this 4th Street block and the buildings on it
continue to represent Austin's LGBTQIA+ community's historical and future
perseverance and identity."

Very interesting framing in this Times of Israel article, noting Israel's repeated violations of the ceasefire and "Israeli foot-dragging". www.timesofisrael.com/trump-will-b...
Holding Israel to unmet commitments
Israel was supposed to cease striking Gaza and meet a series of benchmarks pertaining to the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip that it has largely ignored.

The Board of Peace largely refrained from holding Israel to those commitments, as Hamas dragged its feet on agreeing to the US-led panel’s disarmament proposal. Now that Hamas has consented to the roadmap, Israel will be expected to withdraw to the original Yellow Line that was established in the October 2025 ceasefire. That demarcation kept Israel in control of roughly 53 percent of Gaza, but Israel has since violated that clause by pushing to occupy as much as 70% of the Strip.

Israel won’t be required to withdraw beyond the original Yellow Line until Hamas begins to hand over its weapons, the first Board of Peace official told The Times of Israel, adding that the IDF will only be allowed to respond to what are deemed as imminent threats.

"The young have given us a gift. It is up to us all, every one of us to make what they have done matter." This can be said of so many movements, spurred by the energy and frustration of the young, and all too often thwarted by state violence and the complacency of their elders.
How does a regime which is clearly becoming hugely unpopular have the confidence to not make any concessions to the people who voted for it? Probably because it feels it has successfully gamed the election business. It has captured the machinery. The Election Commission is flawed in its very composition and can no longer be counted upon to be neutral. The EVMs have been managed, the electoral rolls now exclude millions of real people and include millions of phantom names, the bureaucracy that oversees elections have shown themselves to be utterly complicit, the courts can be depended upon to delay or turn a blind eye to egregious malpractice, the police have no idea what neutrality is, the press genuflects each time someone in power clicks their fingers at it. Constituencies are going to be re-mapped to make sure that it is always Advantage BJP. What does the ruling party have to fear? Why should it listen to anyone? It is the richest political party on earth, backed by the richest industrialists in the world. It can buy anything. And anyone. Or so it believes.

I have a feeling I enjoyed this review of "Pompeii: Out of Time With Tom Hiddleston" far more than I'd enjoy the program. The description alone of him "raising his soulful eyes to our bog-standard eyes" was well worth the read. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...
Prof Tuck shows Tom some ancient records and inscriptions and Tom, who has the Latin, translates them. The first candidate they find is a boy called Lucius Avianius (which, if my own Latin does not desert me, translates as “Lucy Birdyus”). Tom looks – nay, surely is! – deep in thought. “If I’m going to tell Avianius’s story,” he says at last, raising his soulful eyes to our bog-standard eyes, “I need to combine the historical evidence with what I do as an actor. I need” – voice drop, eyes soulfuller – “to walk alongside him, through the streets in his shoes.” The Romans had the same word for “story” and “history”, he says. “Evidence and imagination intermingled,” he continues, knotting his fingers together. Consider me awed.

Avi Bluth, who calls terrorist settlers his partners, and Tamir Yadai, who calls Palestinian babies terrorists, are not part of the current government. They are not creatures of Netanyahu or Likud. They hold the highest rank in the IDF, and they endure as governments come and go. They are Israel.
Maj Gen Avi Bluth, who commands Israeli forces in the West Bank, told residents of extremist outposts that he “appreciates their work” and considered them to be partners in security with the military.

Bluth, who grew up in a West Bank settlement himself, spoke on Wednesday at a meeting of the euphemistically named Farms Association, which represents settlements that are illegal even under Israeli law.

These play a key role in campaigns of terror that have driven Palestinians from their homes and lands across the occupied West Bank.Israel now controls 65% of Gaza, Israel’s deputy chief of staff, Maj Gen Tamir Yadai, told Katz in an on-camera briefing. This is far beyond the 53% agreed under the ceasefire brokered last year by the US president, Donald Trump.

About 2 million Palestinians who survived Israel’s war of annihilation are crowded into the remaining third of Gaza’s territory.

“I don’t know how to describe this, other than victory, when you control 65% of the territory, when you have killed over 70,000 terrorists here,” Yadai said.

His figures appeared to label 21,000 Palestinian children killed by Israeli attacks as “terrorists”, including more than 1,000 babies who never reached their first birthday.

Every interview with Jimi Hendrix reveals this sweet gentle soul just grooving on the universe and trying to put that into music. We need so much more of that. parade.com/news/jimi-he...
"I got the idea like, when we were in Monterey and I was just looking at everything around. So I figured that I take everything I see around and put it maybe in the form of a girl maybe, somethin’ like that, you know, and call it ‘Little Wing’, and then it will just fly away. Everybody’s really flyin’ and they’re really in a nice mood, like the police and everybody was really, really great out there. So I just took all these things and put them in one very, very small little matchbox, you know, into a girl and then do it. It was very simple, but I like it though."
