Makes me think of those cheap plug'n'plays. Sometimes people want a cheaper option, especially if small and portable. I find myself more interested in these projects than a PS5/6, so a PS2-2 is more likely to see my money.

I know it isn't a "just get more of those parts and make it again" type deal, in all likelihood these would be locked down emulation boxes. Which might kill some interest, small teams developing for unique architecture is neat. But it seems these things are coming anyway, even if off brand.

With the success of so many emulation handhelds, feels like a missed opportunity not to just keep making old ones. Most people will lazily prefer official even if emulation is better. This is how the Vita makes a comeback, it isn't too late!

Don't think most were saying Riot's expectations are reasonable, but against the dichotomy of game with merit vs attempting to succeed. Especially as 10 year dev only heightened the bar they had to hit. RT reskinned out around covid probably would've still not hit the bar but had more of a chance.

I absolutely understand why people find G-Reco's dialogue confusing, but I personally love how character's constantly talk past each other. Communication often is about trying to steer through what you half think someone said. Its a real trust the show, the little pieces add up eventually.

Wish people would consider why they interact with a game, community or mod. Instant gain and pleasure isn't gonna leave you satisfied in the long run. Yet many parts of the FGC can't help bet on a game, sponsor, prince or AI. Pretending any ill consequences or it hitting a wall aren't possible.

Perhaps you could say there is not much art to coding rollback into SF4 or the like. Yet the care of making sure it was done right previously lead to the rollback revolution. It's the care which makes how we iterate on art that shapes the meaning. New from old, or shiny regurgitation.

Cause that's kind of what many mods do. Remove this part, change the art design, make things how I want them. At least a human hand shaping it is expression, it tells you about who did it and can be beautiful. Great for learning. But AI means you can have everything they way you want for no effort.

Modding can be very cool, but for a while I've grappled with the impact on internationality in games. Iteration in art is not new, though why changes are made means something. So the AI mod trend is no surprise to me. Its the easiest way to remove intention and pump out self satisfaction.

Pretty much every left wing argument for AI is imagine if the situation was entirely different, and the only thought that inspires is they wouldn't have released the majority of this for another 10+ years out of quality and safety concerns.

I do worry that the enjoyment of something has become way too many steps removed from what's in your hands. Memories are celebrated, updates anticipated. To enjoy the present you have to appreciate things for what they are.

But multiply that by gacha levels. Your character could constantly be getting new units, story, outfits, etc. You're betting on a horse, possibly literally, and being rewarded by the company saying yes they were the best and deserve more content. Instead of added once a game, possibly whenever.

The psychology of game updates seems under explored. A lot of self worth is put in the game/character/mechanic/etc they like most being next to get touched up. More than getting new content to chew on, its the gamble of being proven you picked well. Or like all gambling the thrill of losing.

The pervasiveness of Souls mechanics creates the same feeling I have about Lord of the Rings to fantasy. I love the originals in context, not cause that is the way to do things. What impact estus has is the same question as why do elves hate dwarves. We need art that considers its context deeply.

I don't thing any game must be designed a certain way, but frustration often clouds honestly about impact. Do platformers need contact damage? No but a lack reduces the threat of the enemy, stage and empowers players. You'll need multiple mechanics to reintroduce that risk which also knocks on.
