Pure erasure of your audience of shitty UX professionals who grit their teeth and bear through it all.

I love this breakdown of the government's new "America by Design" website and all the accessibility rules it breaks (or straight up doesn't follow). #Accessibility

Wasn't shapeshifting pretty standard for the ghosts in that movie?

uneasy about the phrasing “extreme disabilities” firing around the media at the moment, as if it implies, if you have a “normal” disability that theoretically permits work in ~some~ capacity, even if it depletes your energy & every second off is spent recovering, then that’s fine

You might know us from the guides we have put together, like the de-risking guide and the UX guide. Governments all around the world have used them to make services more accessible and add more value to the public — all while saving millions of dollars. You can still find them here: 18f.org/guides/

If you are looking for a great #axecon talk, check out this one. Eric provided an unvarnished look at the accessibility industry and how a11y folks can look after ourselves and our colleagues. I'm pumped to dig into the great resources he shared.

Jakob Nielsen has walked back his claim from last year that ‘genAI’ will solve accessibility. Now he says that intelligent agents will moot all accessibility by 2030. I link to a Wayback version of his post from here: adrianroselli.com/2024/03/jako... (anchor link) #accessibility #a11y

But I also realize that real, proven strategies for motivating significant changes like workers’ unions will probably not be platformed by a conference deeply tied to corporate interests.

Completely agree. I am grateful that events like AxeCon exist, and I am taking all the nuggets of knowledge I can out of the talks. Some of the content just feels like it is attempting to coach folks using an outdated playbook.

To put it bluntly, fascists won’t care about accessibility KPIs when they don’t even want disabled people to exist.

I am not convinced that better metrics, empathetic case studies, or accessibility-centered business proposals will sway people who think anything DEIA-coded should be “deleted”

While I appreciate the great speakers sharing their knowledge and skills at #axecon, I’m starting to get a sinking feeling that the #a11y industry is unprepared to confront corporate and governmental forces that are actively hostile toward people with disabilities.

Great analysis from David Dylan Thomas: “We’ve built a web that is indifferent to the land, indifferent to the people, and indifferent to ourselves. We must do better and I believe we can.” #axecon

It seems wildly out of touch at a moment when many accessibility professionals' jobs are already vulnerable, thanks to the abandonment of DEIA initiatives. Deque seems to be throwing gasoline on the fire by shilling an AI “solution” to replace these critical jobs.

#axecon It's pretty gross to go from Wong's powerful message about the need to work directly with people with disabilities to improve accessibility to Deque's alternative vision of "Nah, just ask a chatbot."

#axecon Feels like cognitive whiplash going from Alice Wong telling everybody "100% accessibility is bullshit" in the kickoff keynote speech to Deque's founder Preety Kumar touting advancements in automated accessibility in the very next presentation.
