@astroroyalscot.bsky.social your fabulous book has made it to the CERN library. We took it to see a plaque commemorating the invention of the WWW by Tim Berners-Lee, and by sheer luck also bumped into CERN Director General, Mark Thomson.

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

The new EHRC guidance is a joke. It defines the protected category of sex by biology and then relies on enforcement based on appearance. The GRC has effectively been nullified. It's involuntary disclosure carries criminal penalties but then requires Anyone having a GRC to constantly out themselves.

👇One to pin for anyone with young adults in their lives applying to Uni at the end of this year. I agree 💯 with Joe's excellent advice! "This is liberating, once you accept it .... A good [personal statement] will not save bad grades. A merely competent one will not torpedo good ones." 🧪🔭👩‍🔬🎢⚛️
Universities are also more aligned than ever in what they discourage. Generic, exaggerated, or impersonal statements are out. So are the famous opening clichés — ever since I was small, the future is computing, the obligatory quotation, the Big Bang. So is the laundry list of activities with no reflection on what any of them taught you. Almost every reply I received used some variant of the same word: reflection. They want to know not what you did, but what you made of it.
