Added to the pile. I was very good, and only ordered 3 boxes this time. The アマビエ was the one I just needed to have, but it needed some friends to travel with. Psst: @the17thqueen.bsky.social

It is very important to make your own rice cracker mix. All my salty sweet spicy favourites. That way I’m not picking through for the ones I like, and the last handfuls are ones I actively dislike.

I hope I have the wherewithal to draw tomorrow. Tomorrow is “yokai,” and I will for sure be drawing a yokai. Not sure which one. Past yokai: 化け猫、アマビエ、傘お化け、猫又
Ink drawing of a bakeneko, a two tailed cat dancing on its hind legs with a tea towel on its head. This particular 化け猫 is depicted as a tabby cat. Amabie, a three tailed mermaid of sorts with a beak who appears during plague times. She’s done in paint and ink on paper sitting on a rock in the water under the night sky. Ink by me passing by Brent Wear. An ink drawing of Kasa Obake, a sentient red umbrella portrayed here with one eye, “mouth” torn open with a forked sticking out, hopping on one fishnet stockinged leg wearing a classic character tap shoe. An ink drawing of a nekomata, a cat with two tails: each tipped in flame, portrayed as a white cat with black spots. Claws out, of course.

Red rabbit felt hat isn’t entirely finished. I used the trimmed off pieces for the hat band, and steam manipulated “feathers.” I still need to finish sewing them down, but I them sort of tacked down before I wore it to my friend’s birthday dinner.
Red rabbit felt hat half at arm’s length so you can see the whole hat with felt “feathers” partially sewn down. There’s a pin holding one in place. Me talking a bad mirror selfie to find the centre beside I sewed the inner band in. I always wear my hats at a jaunty angle over my right ear. This Issa how I’ve been wearing all my hats since high school.

I just remembered this existed. I’m going to lay some ink over it. Yes those are haunted taxidermied kittens on one of those Dutch barges full of cats. That’s all the information you need. Started with my art partner in crime, Brent Wear circa 2018. Sing “kitten boat” ominously to the TMA theme.
A partially inked over painting of two orange taxidermied kittens. One is dressed like Napoleon, the other in a lace trimmed Victorian dress with a red parasol. The boat has round windows with wide eyed cats peering out of them. Acrylic paint and ink on paper.

This is the straw. I did an asymmetrical shape with a short brim. First photo is the blocks. You use different blocks stacked together to combine the cap and the brim. You can see her collection of mid century hat blocks in the background.
3 wooden hat blocks combined and stacked to form the base the hat form will be stretched over. The straw hat form wet and shaped over the hat block. The ropes tied around it to keep it in place while it dries. The straw hat form wet and shaped over the hat block taken from a different angle. It has the oldest version of the characters and what they became. My friend and I text each other me in Japanese her in Chinese. It’s a fun puzzle. I have a really good Japanese dictionary app that breaks the characters down into their radicals.

#inktober day 6 “mushroom” Today I learned from my favourite grocery store person told me about the inky cap mushroom. They literally melt to spread their spores. I also learned that they’re edible, but will poison you if combined with alcohol. Drawn, not pencilled out and inked in. #drawtober

This one took several tries until my art partner in crime came over for dinner. I handed the drawing over, and he added the tattered business casual. I then inked him in. Platinum Carbon Black is easier to remove from my hands than Chou Kuro.

Ok #inktober day 2: Vampire I often solicit drawing prompts, and I got two: weasel and pigeon. I am going to ink this in tomorrow. Here they are in a mostly finished pencil sketch. I still have to make them vampires. Turn them if you will. Either way it’s an epic battle. #drawtober #WIP

Heart Hoya is going nuts. Finally repotted it, because it was going to fall over. It spot up another 8 inches within less than a week. It’s the plant they sell around Valentine’s Day in the tiny pot with one heart leaf. It was just that one leaf for 5 years before it grew a vine.

This is coming in another 3+” at the side seams; this time from the back only (or the side seams would be definitively in the front) and another 2ish inches at the top half of the front princess seams. Today added straps along with the additional alterations. It’s a LOT, but my client loves it so..

Repotting and staking day! My poor pothos needs a bigger pot. Of course this realisation happened AFTER the big trip to the garden store yesterday. I have a million cute empty pots that are all always the wrong size.
Mystery purple vine of some sort newly potted in an art deco pot in a metal plant hanger frame shaped like a hexagon, a sad spider plant in a hanging pink disco ball planter and a variety of suncatchers in my window. Another mystery vine that has been in water finally planted and staked up next to a glass medicine bottle with marimo balls. A [redacted] staked up with a higher stake amongst the windowsill jungle. The mess on my kitchen floor featuring an imported spider plant, and a very rooted pathos stuffed into the wrong sized pot surrounded by dirt and empty pots.

Sometimes (who am I kidding? All of the time) I work on things I consider blasphemous. I will rail against anything glued and whatever this latex/flocked “velvet” glued on power mesh that serves as lingerie these days *screaming inside* I added hook and eye tape to these bra-like things.
Are these bralets? They are.. something. Front back of two of the three I cut open the backs and sewed on traditional hook and eye tape. “Nude” power mesh with screen printed(?) on rose pattern latex “lace” top in black, bottom in white.

This is what ate up most of my brain for the last two days: it took me a little less than 5 hours, but it seemed like more. A project I tried to discourage, but no such luck. 1st round prep: removing the top lace piece and taking it in 4” on the sides and 2” at the front process seams.
The before: a cream coloured dress with a navy blue lace overlay. A size 20 on the size 14 dress form; which is about the size it will be when I complete the alterations. The first order of business was to remove the lace top that has a high neckline and cap sleeves. That will be replaced with simple straps at the second fitting. The majority of my life is seam ripping. I also had to open the lining, the parts where the bodice is attached to the skirt at the sides and the front princess seams and the side zipper. The dress with the top lace piece removed. Now, the top is fashioned into a strapless sweetheart neckline. All the preliminary alterations are fully basted together; the top safety pinned closed and ready for the second fitting. Dress is laid out on the cutting table, because I didn’t have the wherewithal to put it back on the dress form.

Instead of showing what I worked on today (and didn’t finish), I want to focus on the distracting insanity Disney princess dress my coworker was working on. Pretty sure the train is 6’ long. If you can believe it, there is a giant crinoline that zips into the inside that makes it twice as big.

Hopefully I’ll have more drawings on future pages than I have had for a while. To be fair I have been working on actual pieces and not sketches (yes, this is what qualifies as a sketch to me). My pages have been more dedicated to practicing writing Japanese than drawing. Top yesterday, bottom 2024.
2024 open calendar page with an incomplete drawing of a sinking yacht that is being struck by lightning. 3 ghosts and a small black cat in a little life boat on the stormy ocean are fleeing the wreckage as rain pours from the sky. Underneath is a page full of Japanese characters and phrases written in pencil from yesterday and the day before.

Coming down with something, which is unfair, since I’m finally getting a hold on my sleep schedule and was starting to feel normal. I’m likely worse than I thought, because nurse bite came and bit the crap out of me this morning. Former cat was a good nurse. Current cat bites. And bites and bites.
My menace of my brown almost black Burmese cat sitting next to me on my bed. (I am not in the picture) Her eyes are black and she is frowning at me. Her diagnosis must not be good, because she is about to attack. This is her solution to healthcare. Biting. Hence Nurse Bite. Back to working on this dude after taking the summer off from this project and drawing in general to allow my hand heal up. It was my non-dominant hand that I still kept managing to re-injure, because I still had to do my sewing job, and rest in between. I still can’t bend that finger into my fist.
My WIP ink drawing featuring a tiny black cat drifting in the night ocean under a crescent moon and starry sky following a line of tiny ghost fires. Drawn on 12 x 16 hot press water colour paper with Copic Multiliner pens. I’d like to say it’s 2/3’s done, but the reality is that it’s probably half done. So much shading; probably 2-3 more layers of ink to go.
