The media could have not platformed Nigel Farage and discredited him 15 years ago. Instead Farage got them what they wanted - Cameron agreeing to a Brexit referendum, Labour and the Tories dragged to the right. Now they want two party politics back with the Tories in power. He’s served his purpose.

Vapes to have less enticing names and flavours to protect children
People are being consulted about plans to stop vape companies using enticing flavour descriptions that "attract" children into experimenting.

I just checked the box of the Moving Mountains burgers I bought yesterday, and had one for tea. I was suspicious of the grease left in the pan. Nearly 20g of saturated fat in one burger. Oil being the top non water ingredient. The other is in the bin. Disgusting. #vegan

Mandelson is a 72yo bloke. I'm not quite sure, in the absence of public toilets in most places at night, what councils expect people to with their piss. Wee their pants? Some sort of teleportation?

Psalms 109:7-9 is a sick burn isn't it. 7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. 8 May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. 9 May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. (NIV)

So I grew up with "Is the Pope Polish?" as a stock reply to an obvious question. I still use this despite obviously they haven't been for years. We need an update. Can I suggest "Does the Pope know Paddington?" This keeps the alliteration belovèd of British and Irish constituencies.

A tariff on foreign movies is sneaky, because what it is is a tax on overseas English-language media. Once you've done it for films, why not news channels? I.e. it contributes to #trump 's fascist agenda by controlling flow of information.

I love a nice wander in Holyrood Park or up Arthur's Seat, but the erosion up there is getting really bad. No wonder there's no bloody skylarks, as the signage says. It's really apparent when you look at the aerial view.

Darren's R Top Tips! A simple way to avoid the failing of "table" in the previous tip would be to sum over a testable condition and use sapply over a range, effectively like a column of SUMIFs in Excel. sapply(1:10, \(i) {sum(c(1,1,2,3,4,5,6,6,6,8,1,2)==i)})

Darren's R Top Tips! Overlooked R function: table() Table can tabulate a vector, which is handy, but also there is pitfall potential: table(c(1,1,2,3,4,5,6,6,6,8,1,2)) Notice here that there are gaps in the tabular output, and it doesn't leave a gap for 7.

Darren's R Top Tips! Overlooked R function: replicate() This is quite different to rep(), and is basically a wrapper for sapply, e.g. replicate(3,list("a",2,3)) Note it produces here a matrix, not just a longer list or vector.
