#cassette #electronica Some rather wonderful electronica/ambient/found-sound stuff from Dogs Versus Shadows on Strategic Tape Reserve. Comes with some 16mm film clippings! Cassette works well for this genre, it adds something of its own that enhances somehow. Available on Bandcamp (see alt txt).

Dogs Versus Shadows 16mm cassette and packaging which includes four strips of 16mm film. Tape playing in background on a restored vintage Nakamichi LX-3. The cassette has a bright orange shell, but that is barely visible as its in the Nak.

#vinyl 2026 LP15 & 16 Durutti Column Renascent & Younger Brother Weapon Of Mass Distraction. Two great new albums from older artists and who can argue with a free Durutti Column tote bag from Piccadilly Records! First spin now, a beautiful album. The YB is excellent too, that one landed yesterday.

Durutti Column and Younger Brother albums on vinyl, the DC is the clear green vinyl limited edition with grey sleeve with stapled-in booklet, the YB a double in a rather nice foil-blocked sleeve. Another Bluesky post where I have used every available letter without saying everything!

#vinyl #aphextwin #electronica For exactly 25 years now I’ve been trying to figure out where to keep this absurdly oversize box set! The odds of playing it all at the right speed is low given half is 33 and half is 45! Today it has been reissued, including a limited dumb box version like this!

$Aphex Twin Drukqs, original ludicrously sized vinyl box towering over more normal sized box sets. A really interesting and abstract album that ventures well out into John Cage-like prepared piano stuff as well as the typically fractured polyrhythmic electronica one might expect from Richard James.$

Joy Division Closer, original UK Factory vinyl from back in the day. It is obviously usually in a protective outer and audiophile archival inner, hence still looking nice and white, I just removed all that for the pic!

#vinyl 2026 LP12 #electronica Boards Of Canada day came early this week. Rather good it is too. Comments on pressing etc in alt text where there is so much more room!

Boards Of Canada - Inferno. Red vinyl “limited” edition (I get the impression they have pressed loads across multiple plants) with tri-fold sleeve, booklet and surprise hexagonal flexi-disk. Cut is very good, it sounds superb, though looks to have been pressed at GZ with all the QC issues that implies. Minor edge-warp on LP1, and a rather alarming one inch scuff on LP2 that thankfully doesn’t sound at all (it is a very quiet pressing). As such I’ll keep it, but it always annoys me paying full price for vinyl with issues that obviously impact collector value (I’m a record dealer amongst other things). Enjoying it musically. Very much a follow-on from Campfire Headphase and Tomorrows Harvest.

#vinyl 2026 #jazz Jeff Parker ETA IVTet - Happy Today. Another two lengthy live jams to add to the wonderful Way Out Of Easy double from a couple of years ago. Wonderful stuff and a wonderful recording. Odd crackle here and there from the blue vinyl, but not bad. Highly recommended.

Kneecap Fenian Bandcamp splatter vinyl edition with fanzine. Squarepusher Kammer Konzert, 2xLP. Both highly recommended in their own way. Both great cuts, these are very good sounding records.

#vinyl 2026 LP8 Deary - Birding. So much great #shoegaze at present Fans of Heaven Or Las Vegas-era Cocteaus etc will love this. I feel old being there the first time around! Quality anyway, might still be able to find signed clear copies on Bandcamp if you move fast.

Deary Birding clear vinyl (playing), inner, and signed postcard. The odd crackle and pop after a wet clean, but not bad. Quite a nice cut, it does sound good.

#vinyl 2026 LP6 Pre-order of Mandy Indiana’s Urgh arrived. Industrial synth-pop stuff, maybe think DAF, SPK, Front242, TG etc. Comes with appropriate eye-protection for the yellow/orange splatter vinyl. Not the best pressing (infill?), but it is so obnoxious and in your face its barely noticeable!

Dinked Edition of Mandy Indiana’s Urgh with signed insert and coloured glasses (not 3d as both “lenses” same colour). A rather noisy pressing with persistent noise hard-right, which suggests GZ vinyl got the pressing temperature wrong. Again. That said it is such a noisy industrial racket it doesn’t get in the way, but given the price of vinyl these days a bit more QC would be welcome!

#vinyl #shoegaze 2026 LP5 Whitelands second album Sunlight Echoes just landed. There’s either a huge shoegaze revival at present, or it never went away. Either way this is another great album in that genre. I managed to score a nice signed green one from Pie & Vinyl.

First one of 2025 lands; Dry Cleaning’s Secret Love on “apricot” vinyl with signed photo. Actually quiet and flat! Rather good so far. No massive departure from the previous two albums, they are what they are, and it’s this. I’ll maybe try documenting everything new I buy this year.

#Vinyl New Wet Leg album Moisturiser landed, albeit a day late despite the comedically huge £6.15 postage charge. It is growing on me after a couple of plays. The “3d lenticular” cover of this edition is quite amusing; Rhian’s somewhat creepy expression changes depending on the viewing angle.

#Vinyl New Yeule album ‘Evangelic Girl Is A Gun’ landed a day early - I get it ahead of Tidal etc! Great loud punchy cut and exactly as odd as I was hoping. No idea how one categorises this stuff, but if you like their previous albums you’ll like it.

Yeule album on rather odd looking black and white splatter vinyl, this is the ‘deluxe edition’ with different artwork, poster etc.

#Vinyl New Stereolab album landed and very good it is too. A surprising return to form after such a huge (15 year!) break. I like this one and it gets better as the album progresses too. Nice cut too, the vinyl sounds really good (clear vinyl here).

Kind of hippie-prog meets Stereolab, bonkers 45 rpm glitter vinyl! Actual glitter, and it doesn’t sound like sandpaper.

#vinyl New BDRM album Microtonic just landed and is sounding very decent. Rather more electronica/ambient than the last one, but still in that general shoegaze/post-rock area. It is very blue.

#Vinyl #Beatles I heard the sad news that Rutherford Chang, the artist behind the ‘We Buy White Albums’ exhibition died last month at the age of just 45. I visited the exhibition (Liverpool) and have the record, which is 100 White Albums layered. Quite Steve Reich as it shifts in phase etc! RIP.

#retrocomputing Spend much of Christmas fixing my increasingly temperamental BBC Micro. Traced it to a PSU cap on its way out (C9) which had already been done in a full recap only a few years ago! All seems rock solid again now; solid 5V etc, boots fine, seems happy…

A BBC Microcomputer and Sony Trinitron CRT TV. Also visible a 5 1/4” floppy drive and joystick. Boot screen and prompt visible on TV.
